"Within the impressive walls of the Rijksmuseum shines the glorious radiance of the Golden Age of Dutch and Flemish painting. The golden age of Dutch art : painting, sculpture, decorative art by Judikje Kiers( Book )

3 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 898 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"To mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Dutch National Art Gallery (later the Rijksmuseum), it was decided to bring together all the greatest masterpieces of the Golden Age, both those that remained at home and those that had been dispersed throughout the world, to make a definitive exhibition celebrating that wonderful century. This book is a record of that exhibition and a way of giving it permanent form. All the exhibits are reproduced in colour and linked by brief commentaries providing information on the artists, their social background and patronage. It includes not only paintings but also examples of the applied arts of the time, from silver by the brothers Van Vianen and tapestries by Francois Spierings to exquisite pieces of Delftware."--Jacket

Jan Steen, painter and storyteller by H. Perry Chapman( Book )

4 editions published in 1996 in English and Undetermined and held by 822 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Written by H. Perry Chapman, Wouter Th. Kloek, and Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr., with contributions by other noted art historians, this book draws on the most recent scholarship and archival research to reassess Steen within the context of seventeenth-century Netherlandish artistic, literary, and cultural movements. A translation of Arnold Houbraken's biography of Steen, written in the eighteenth century, is included, as well as a biographical essay that uses numerous contemporary sources to present the most comprehensive profile on Steen yet published. Other essays discuss Steen's relationship to the theater and to other Dutch painters of the time, his critical reception, and his varied self-portrayals. Fifty of Steen's paintings, chosen to demonstrate his consummate skill as both painter and storyteller, are catalogued in detail
The art of devotion in the late Middle Ages in Europe, 1300-1500 by H. W. van Os( Book )

15 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 691 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Art for private devotion, or 'props in an intimate theatre of spirituality' as Henk van Os characterizes it, includes some of the most extraordinary as well as the most beautiful objects created in the Late Middle Ages. Selecting the best preserved and most interesting examples of devotional art made in Europe in the two centuries before the Reformation, the author dramatically draws aside the veil on the prayer and meditation 'exercises' which the clergy and high-placed laity once practiced, using these objects as an aid towards their passionately desired goal of communion with Jesus. This book makes available a modern, well informed perspective on medieval religious art and iconography. It covers fundamental attitudes to images, the connection between art, relics, and visions, the relationship of public and private art, the role of local saints and religious movements."--Publisher description

Rembrandt : the master & his workshop by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn( Book )

3 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 498 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Rembrandt is an artist who has excited exceptional interest since his own lifetime: the remarkable combination of his work, his complex personal relationships, his financial difficulties and the relative lack of documentary evidence has generated a vast body of scholarship. As a result, by the middle of this century, innumerable paintings and drawings were attributed to Rembrandt and a romantic mythology had replaced the facts of his life. The Rembrandt Research Project, comprising the foremost Rembrandt scholars, based in Amsterdam, has undertaken the formidable task of establishing a body of works which can be securely attributed to Rembrandt. This has resulted in the deattribution of many paintings, once unquestioningly accepted as Rembrandts. Others have focused on artists known to have studied in Rembrandt's workshop and the attribution of paintings to these students. This magnificent book unites these two strands of research to present for the first time a clear picture of Rembrandt's relationship with the members of his workshop. The book also serves as a catalogue of the exhibition organised by curators from Berlin, Amsterdam and London--galleries which have three of the finest collections of Rembrandts. It includes essays on Rembrandt's biography and social status, his technique, the organisation of his workshop, and the history of critical response to him. The catalogue contains detailed study of fifty-one paintings by Rembrandt, providing a chronological overview of his entire output from his earliest subjects to the last self-portrait. This is followed by sections for pupils, including Ferdinand Bol, Gerrit Dou and Nicolaes Maes, in which paintings once given to Rembrandt are reattributed to members of his workshop and related to paintings known to be by them. Thus readers may judge these new ideas for themselves on the basis of the evidence provided. -- Inside jacket flap
Rembrandt : the late works by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn( Book )

3 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 418 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From the mid-1650s until his death at age sixty-three, Rembrandt van Rijn (1606--1669) generated a remarkable body of work as he searched for a new, painterly, and expressive style. His later works demonstrate his mastery, skillfulness, and exceptional ability to render the effects of light, and they have since defined his image as an artist. Rembrandt gleaned inspiration from his direct study of nature, exalting the humble, the mundane, and even the ugly, particularly in his self-portraits and works based on his everyday surroundings. His intimate pictures of figures from history, often portrayed in austere or introspective attitudes, are created with extraordinary sensitivity. This handsome volume includes superb reproductions of some of Rembrandt's most recognizable paintings, alongside etchings and drawings in various media that demonstrate his mastery of the graphic medium. Through a series of thematic essays, the authors draw on new research to examine Rembrandt's iconographic, stylistic, and technical innovations and underscore how his work in one medium influenced his work in others. This captivating book is the first to focus exclusively on the paintings, drawings, and prints that Rembrandt produced during the final, most creative phase of his career"

Asia in Amsterdam : the culture of luxury in the Golden Age by Rijksmuseum (Netherlands)( Book )

5 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 331 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This lavishly illustrated catalogue discusses the Asian luxury goods that were imported into the Netherlands during the 17th century and demonstrates the overwhelming impact these works of art had on Dutch life and art during the Golden Age. Written by a team of 30 international scholars, this volume presents seven essays and catalogue entries on 150 works of art, including Dutch and Asian paintings, textiles, ceramics, lacquer, furniture, silver, diamonds, and jewelry. From the Dutch settlements throughout Asia--including Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, China, and Japan--Dutch maritime traders brought an astonishing range of luxuries back to the Netherlands. Dutch consumers were enthralled with these foreign goods, which brought new colors, patterns, and textures to their interiors and wardrobes. As seen in the book's many illustrations, Dutch artists also found inspiration in these objects and incorporated them into portraits, genre scenes, and particularly still-life paintings. Dutch artists and craftspeople also adapted distinctly Asian technologies, such as porcelain and lacquer, to create new works of art inspired by Asia. This catalogue weaves together the complex stories of these diverse works of art and presents fascinating portraits of the dynamic cities of Amsterdam and Batavia (Jakarta)--the Dutch trade center in Asia during the 17th century"

3 editions published in 2000 in English and Undetermined and held by 219 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This catalogue, compiled by leading authorities, aims to illustrate a broad and representative selection of Rembrandt's finest prints. New areas of research have opened up in recent years, allowing us to follow the progress of his work on each plate and revealing how and when he revised the images at various times during his life. The papers he used are studied and previously unknown watermarks are reproduced. The roles played by Rembrandt's preparatory oil sketches and drawings are also now better understood, and these new insights are presented to a wider public for the first time in this lavishly illustrated volume."--Jacket

Small wonders : late-Gothic boxwood micro-carvings from the low countries by Ont.) Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto( Book )

2 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Boxwood prayer beads, rosaries and miniature altarpieces made in Northern Europe during the early 1500s demonstrate the limitless potential of human artistic practice. These tiny masterpieces, small enough to fit in the palm of the hand, depict complex scenes with elegance and precision. Without fail, they inspire viewers to ask how a person could have possibly made them, a question that can only be answered today. Debuting in Toronto, the exhibition Small Wonders: Gothic Boxwood Miniatures brings together for the first time more than 60 rare boxwood carvings from institutions and private collections across Europe and North America. The exhibition offers new insight into the methods of production and cultural significance of these awe-inspiring works of art, highlighting the cutting edge technology used by curators and conservators in their search to understand these miniature sculptures
On country roads and fields : the depiction of 18th- and 19th-century landscape by Wiepke Loos( Book )

1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The exhibition presents the finest and most characteristic examples of landscape paintings, drawings and watercolours by Dutch artists of two bygone centuries. They have been selected from numerous public and private collections in the Netherlands and other countries. The artists share an intense love of nature, a love no less fervent than that of their predecessors of the Dutch Golden Age, to whom the Rijksmuseum devoted the exhibition Masters of 17th-century Dutch landscape painting in 1987-88. Now, ten years later, it is the turn of the generations that followed." "The catalogue of On country roads and fields runs the gamut of such varied phenomena as the painted wall decorations of the 18th century, the Romantic landscapes of Koekkoek and Schelfhout in the middle of the 19th century, the impressionist renderings of the Hague School, represented by Roelofs, Mauve and Weissenbruch, and ending around the turn of the century with the innovatory ideas of artists like Toorop, Van Gogh, Sluijters and Mondriaan. No matter where the artists found their inspiration - in Italy, in the Dutch polders or simply in a view seen through a window - each and every one of the more than hundred masterpieces radiates a profound and intimate relationship with the landscape."--BOOK JACKET
Maritime prints by the Dutch masters by Irene de Groot( Book )

1 edition published in 1980 in English and held by 134 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Adriaen van de Velde : Dutch master of landscape by Bart Cornelis( Book )

4 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 133 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A Dutch Italianate, Adriaen Van de Velde represents a point of artistic communication across borders, fusing agricultural landscapes in Holland with mythological Arcadian scenes in Italian settings. He died at the early age of 35, and yet he produced a great number of masterpieces that earned him tremendous posthumous fame in the 18th and 19th centuries, when he was one of the most sought-after names among collectors in Germany, France and England. Compared to Mozart's chamber music by the renowned art historian Wolfgang Stechow (1896-1974), Van de Velde's works are delicate and carefully composed and demonstrate his mastery of lighting effects as well as the human figure. His father Willem van de Velde the Elder and brother of the Younger were both marine painters, who in the winter of 1672-73 moved from Leiden to England to work in the service of King Charles II. Adriaen, by contrast, almost certainly never travelled outside his native country and chose to paint landscapes rather than seascapes. His meadows, Italianate views, beaches, dunes, forests, winter scenes and portraits in landscape settings and are among the very best that the Dutch Golden Age has produced. Exhibition: Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (24.06.-25.09.2016) / Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, UK (12.10.2016-15.01.2017)
The world of Jan Brandes, 1743-1808 : drawings of a Dutch traveller in Batavia, Ceylon and Southern Africa by Max de Bruijn( Book )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 126 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hercules Segers : painter, etcher by Hercules Seghers( Book )

2 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 122 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hercules Segers (1589/90-1633/40) was an artist, like Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt van Rijn, who wanted to fathom and reproduce the essence of nature and the world. There is no evidence that Segers ever travelled or saw mountains in real life. His strange and wonderful mountain landscapes and endless vistas bear witness to an unbounded imagination. Segers was a truly pioneering etcher, developing wholly individual, arcane techniques for his colourful etchings. Poets and artists down through the ages have been inspired and fascinated by his poetic and melancholic paintings and prints. Rembrandt owned no fewer than eight of his paintings. A total of eighteen paintings and a hundred and ten impressions of fifty-four prints will be on show in the Rijksmuseum. Exhibition: Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, The Netherlands (07.10.2016-08.01.2017) / Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, USA (2017)
