Surviving the eighties by Lewis B Mayhew( Book )

10 editions published between 1979 and 1980 in English and held by 779 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The survival of higher education institutions is addressed in this book. Strategies and procedures for assuring institutional vitality are outlined, based on the author's 30 years of studying and advising colleges and universities in various states of financial health. The major components of institutional vitality are enumerated, including a well-defined educational mission and clientele, unified administrative leadership, and vigorous cost control. Identified are those institutions in greatest danger, such as privately-supported colleges lacking a distinctive purpose and identity. Chapters discuss such topics as: improving administrative structures, policies, and leadership; management systems for handling crisis and development; anticipating and planning for the future; defining educational mission; enrollment improvement; faculty performance and cost; and implementing survival strategies. A reading list is provided at the end of each chapter for in-depth study. Avoiding error is offered as the best remedy for future ails, best accomplished by having adequate consultants and administrators keenly aware of all the functions of the higher education system. An appendix offers suggestions for increasing income. Also provided are additional references and an index. (Lc)
The quest for quality : the challenge for undergraduate education in the 1990s by Lewis B Mayhew( Book )

6 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 723 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book addresses the process of achieving, maintaining, and restoring academic and intellectual quality in American higher education. It argues that: (1) the fundamental mission of the undergraduate institution is to prepare learners through the use of words, numbers, and abstract concepts; and (2) public responsibility for the support of higher education should be limited to those activities leading either to academic degrees or to vocational preparation on a reasonably sophisticated level. A narrow definition of academic credit is urged as is a limited set of functions for collegiate institutions. The three chapters of Part 1 look at past and present forces impacting on quality in undergraduate education. The six chapters of Part 2 examine how faculty and administrators can take the lead in strengthening academic quality. Part 3, comprising three chapers, covers the role of monitoring and coordinating agencies in maintaining academic quality. Contains 142 references. (Db)

Educational leadership and declining enrollments by Lewis B Mayhew( Book )

6 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 340 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a report of a major curriculum revision undertaken by the faculty in educational administration in the School of Education, Stanford University. Sensing the educational needs of the 1970's and 1980's, the Stanford faculty pondered the kinds of administrative services likely to be needed and suggested one model that might have applicability beyond Stanford. The curriculum revision was conducted in the context of changes in education for the professions generally, changes detected in professional education, and recent policy analyses and pronuncements regarding all of American education. Part 1 contains the rationale for a new program in educational administration at Stanford, as well as an indication as to how a number of critical issues were resolved. Part 2 presents papers and summaries of papers prepared for an Invitational Conference held at Stanford in January 1974. This conference was intended as a means of obtaining reactions from the field of educational administration to what the Stanford faculty was proposing. The appendix presents a set of guidelines and course descriptions for the new program in educational administration as envisioned by the faculty after its curriculum study. (Author)
Reform in graduate education by Lewis B Mayhew( Book )

6 editions published in 1972 in English and Undetermined and held by 296 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph is concerned with changes, innovations, and reforms in graduate education in the arts and sciences. It was written as an aid to faculty and administrators who must plan graduate programs in the future. While it does make suggestions and recommendations, it is chiefly intended to raise questions and to suggest ways by which graduate curricula may be examined and changed. Thus the book stands as a connecting link between the body of serious but unsystematic criticisms of graduate education of the past and what may become a thorough analysis of actual change of graduate education in the future.
