Unfamiliar streets : the photographs of Richard Avedon, Charles Moore, Martha Rosler, and Philip-Lorca DiCorcia by Katherine A Bussard( Book )

4 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 448 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

City scenes have been chronicled in photographs since the early 1800s, but street photography as traditionally defined has captured a relatively narrow field of these images. Revolutionizing the history of street photography, Unfamiliar Streets explores the work of Richard Avedon (1923-2004), Charles Moore (1931-2010), Martha Rosler (b. 1943), and Philip-Lorca diCorcia (b. 1951), four American photographers whose careers in fashion, photojournalism, conceptual art, and contemporary art are not usually associated with the genre. Bussard's lively and engaging text, a timely response to a growing interest in urban photography, challenges the traditional understanding of street photography and makes original and important connections among urban culture, social history, and the visual arts, constructing a new historical model for understanding street photography. Illustrated with more than one hundred images, this book provides an interpretation of a compelling genre that is as fresh as its consideration of the city streets themselves, sites of commerce, dispossession, desire, demonstration, power, and spectacle

Nothing personal by Richard Avedon( Book )

27 editions published between 1964 and 2017 in 5 languages and held by 375 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1964, Richard Avedon, at the time the world's most famous fashion photographer, and James Baldwin, a leading literary voice in the black struggle in America, collaborated on a searing portrait book, Nothing Personal. This controversial classic from the heart of the American civil rights movement explores the contradictions and extremities at the heart of the American experience, and is especially timely in the age of Donald Trump. Avedon's subjects range from intellectuals, politicians, a former slave, newlyweds, preacher Billy Graham, pop singers, and civil rights activists, shot in his signature formal and graphic black and white, often tightly cropped. The collection is all the more poignant through its bold and deliberate juxtaposition of specific images, such as Jewish gay poet Vilen Ginsberg placed opposite the American Nazi Party. Avedon's work with mental asylum patients, shot in a grainy documentary style, is equally harrowing, although he chooses to end Nothing Personal on a hopeful, positive note, with images of children and parents reveling in the Californian ocean. The photographs are complemented by Baldwin's four-part polemic: a critique of a society that he feels is unjust, alienating, divisive, and therefore in the midst of an existential crisis. In a highly personal and pertinent testimony, Baldwin openly writes about his own experience of harassment by a racist policeman on the streets of New York. This is a meticulous reprint of the original, which has long been out of print, produced in close collaboration with the Richard Avedon Foundation. A 72-page accompanying booklet features never-before-seen outtakes, contact sheets, portraits of the authors at work, preliminary layouts, correspondence, ephemera, and an essay by Baldwin expert and Pulitzer Prize winner Hilton Als."--

What becomes a legend most? : the Blackglama story by Peter Rogers( Book )

6 editions published between 1979 and 1980 in English and held by 194 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a rather unusual book by Peter Rogers, the advertising agency executive who created the long-running series of magazine ads featuring famous people wearing Blackglama fur coats. These advertisements—photographed by fashion icons like Bill King and Richard Avedon--feature such subjects as Marlene Dietrich, Lillian Hellman, Liza Minnelli, Mary Martin, and Ethel Merman. Each is accompanied by Mr. Rogers’s recollections of the photo shoots, and the reactions of said celebrities during same. The celebs were paid with the fur coats they modeled, which seems a square deal. Who among them thought it was a truly fair trade?
