Shitao : 1642-1707 : la saveur du monde by François Cheng( Book )

3 editions published between 1998 and 2002 in French and held by 44 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Shitao's late work, 1697-1707 : a thematic map by Jonathan Hay( )

3 editions published between 1989 and 1991 in English and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This attempt to map out the full range of the artist's thematic concerns ca. 1697-1707 aims to uncover the underlying reasons for his choices of subject and style. It reveals Shitao to have practised painting as a rich mode of self-cultivation, one which in his late years was the primary means by which he defined his private and public identity. Through painting he came to terms with complex personal circumstances which included: the failure of his ambitions at the capital in 1690-1692, his disappointment with and exit from the Buddhist priesthood, a new involvement with Daoism, the open recognition of desire, his entry into the world of professional painting, the heritage of his Ming imperial background, the experience of aging, and a philosophical and religious engagement with the self. Finally, the study also aims to demonstrate the relevance of these concerns to the wider community from which his friends and patrons were drawn
