Sex, career and family: including an international review of women's roles by Michael Fogarty( Book )

26 editions published between 1971 and 2017 in English and held by 895 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although concerned primarily with women in top jobs, the study also extends to women's opportunities in professional and managerial positions. It also focuses on the general pattern of relationships between men and women. Examining the special problem of women's promotion to top jobs, Part 1 studies the discrepancy between women's contribution to the lower and middle ranks of many highly qualified professions and the smaller number of women in higher posts. Part 2 reviews recent developments in Eastern Europe and in Western countries, studying the convergence of their different ideological points of view, attitudes, and policies. Based on national surveys, Part 3 considers the career and family patterns envisaged by young, highly qualified British women and the practicability of reconciling the two careers of husband and wife with successful family life. Part 4 examines the results of studies of women's experience in the following occupations: industrial and general business management, the broadcasting industry, Administrative Civil Service, architecture, medicine, teaching, and social service. Finally Part 5 considers possible long range implications of the enquiry, and of parallel work by Political and Economic Planning (pep) on the agencies promoting equal opportunities for women. Statistical data are appended. (Mw)

Leisure and the family life cycle by Rhona Rapoport( Book )

16 editions published between 1975 and 1978 in English and held by 630 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The authors describe people's preoccupations at different stages of the life cycle, and look at holidays, hobbies, and institutionalised leisure, in terms of the contemporary changes in society. While not denying the need for large-scale societal support for many leisure and recreational programmes, they are particularly concerned with the hazards of the rapid institutionalisation of leisure, and suggest ways in which leisure providers can bridge the gap between their emerging institutions and the people for whom they are built
Children, youth, and families : the action-research relationship by Robert N Rapoport( Book )

15 editions published between 1985 and 2010 in English and held by 523 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book examines the connections between basic research in the social sciences, and political and social action to improve the situations of children, youth, and families. In the 1950s and 1960s, following the many effective applications of their work during World War II, there Was a vigorous interplay between social scientists and those engaged in programme development. More recently, their paths have diverged. Adducing the model of the physical sciences, Robert N. Rapoport and his collaborators argue that this divergence contributes to inhibition of action initiatives, on the one hand, and stagnation in the quest for new knowledge, on the other. Dr Rapoport raises ten key questions about the appropriate relationship between research and action, and these issues are discussed in the fields of education, youth employment and unemployment, juvenile justice, child health, community mental health, social services, and family research by authors who have had extensive and authoritative involvement in these areas

"All people and regions of the world are deeply affected by world events, no matter how closely they embrace or how actively they try to resist their impact. This book explores some of the ways globalization has changed and formed children, youth, and families. It defines some of the ways that culture, politics, religion, and world events have altered the attitudes, behaviours, and well-being of families. It also outlines some of the approaches that families have taken, and could take, in adapting to the changing world around them. Authors provide perspectives from over 20 countries and from many professional backgrounds, including sociology, psychology, religion, political science, peace studies, environmental studies, and economics. Suggestions are given for future research studies, interventions with families, and the construction of public policies."--Jacket
