Heinrich Heine has been one of the liveliest topics in German literary studies for the past fifteen years. His life was marked by an exceptionally high pitch of constant public controversy and an extraordinary quantity of legend and speculation surround his reputation. This biography, the first in English in over twenty years and the first fully documented one in over a century, makes full use of the newest material in contemporary studies as well as of older scholarship.Originally published in 1980.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Wilhelm Raabe : the fiction of the alternative community by Jeffrey L Sammons( Book )

11 editions published between 1987 and 2017 in English and held by 477 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is grounded in a conviction that Wilhelm Raabe (1831-1910) was the major nineteenth-century novelist in the German language between Goethe and Fontane, and a writer deserving of an honorable place in the canon of European literature. Raabe, as I shall try to show, was distinctly a German Victorian writer. Raabe wrote, at a minimum, a dozen novels of significant rank. Of no other German-language novelist of the time can this be said. - p. xi
Italian journey by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe( Book )

6 editions published between 1989 and 1994 in English and held by 449 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1786, when he was already the acknowledged leader of the Sturm und Drang literary movement, Goethe set out on a journey to Italy to fulfil a personal and artistic quest and to find relief from his responsibilities and the agonies of unrequited love. As he travelled to Venice, Rome, Naples and Sicily he wrote many letters, which he later used as the basis for the Italian Journey. A journal full of fascinating observations on art and history, and the plants, landscape and the character of the local people he encountered, this is also a moving account of the psychological crisis from which Goethe emerged newly inspired to write the great works of his mature years."--Book cover

Ludwig Börne : a memorial by Heinrich Heine( Book )

5 editions published between 2006 and 2013 in English and held by 160 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1840, Heinrich Heine, the major German poet of Jewish origin of the age, published a book on Ludwig Borne, the major German political writer of Jewish origin of the period, who had died three years before. Regarded by Heine and others as his best-written book, it was also his most disastrously conceived. Intended to recover the high ground of revolutionary principle and philosophy against the attacks mounted on him by Borne and his supporters, the book was instead met by a storm of outrage from which it seemed Heine's reputation might never recover. In the course of time, the evaluation was reversed; Heine was increasingly celebrated as a true herald of revolution. His vocabulary of Hellenism and Nazarenism, employed for the first time in Borne, was transmitted into English usage by Matthew Arnold. But Borne itself is Heine's only major work that has never been fully translated into English. The commentary to the edition clarifies the conflict between the two most prominent German-Jewish public intellectuals of their time, corrects the misapprehensions constantly in circulation about their relationship and the book, and reveals the many peculiarities of the text."--Publisher's website
