Highway noise; a design guide for highway engineers by Beranek, and Newman Bolt( Book )

1 edition published in 1971 in English and held by 131 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Various methods of assessing noise, loudness, and noise annoyance are reviewed and explained; sources, types, and intensities of traffic noise are noted; typical means of abatement and attenuation are described; design criteria for various land uses ranging from low-density to industrial are suggested and compared with the results of previous BBN and British systems for predicting annoyance and complaint; and a design guide for predicting traffic noise, capable of being programmed for batch and on-line computer applications, is presented in form suitable for use as a working tool. A flow diagram describes the interrelationships of elements in the traffic noise prediction methodology, and each element is discussed in detail in the text. The text is presented of a tape recording that takes the listener through a series of traffic situations, with such variables as traffic distance, flow velocity, distance, outdoors and indoors, and presence or absence of absorbers and attenuators
Highway noise : generation and control by Beranek, and Newman Bolt( Book )

2 editions published in 1976 in English and held by 125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A set of procedures has been developed and is presented here to give highway engineers greater capability in predicting, evaluating and alleviating traffic-generated noise impacts on the community through highway design practices. The procedures include a manual method using nomographs and a computer program that incorporates plotting routines to identify problem locations. The design guide procedures may be applied both to location or design studies for new highways and to projects involving modifications to existing highways

Highway noise: measurement, simulation, and mixed reactions by William J Galloway( Book )

1 edition published in 1969 in English and held by 117 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Two major studies formed the basis for a theory of traffic noise from which a simulation model was built, and computers were used to describe the noise of different highway situations. The two studies basic to the simulation model involved comparing various measures of sound, and deciding upon a simple, yet satisfactory physical measure of the level of sound, and then measuring noise produced by various kinds and classes of vehicles

Noise assessment guidelines by Theodore J Schultz( Book )

1 edition published in 1971 in English and held by 105 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (hud), in its efforts to provide decent housing and a suitable living environment, is concerned with noise as a major source of environmental pollution. To this end, these guidelines are presented to provide site screening techniques. The procedures described have been developed so that people without technical training will be able to assess the exposure of a housing site to present and future noise conditions. Assessment is designed as an evaluation of the site's exposure to three major sources of noise--aircraft, roadways, and railways. Information needed to make the assessment is listed at the beginning of each section under headings which indicate the most likely source from which to obtain the information. Evaluation of the site exposure is given in terms of acceptability categories: clearly acceptable, normally acceptable, normally unacceptable, and clearly unacceptable. Final evaluation is determined according to the least favorable category found for any of the individual source evaluations. A fourth, optional evaluation technique, a Walk-Away Test, is described as useful when previous evaluations leave doubt as to the site's acceptability. Additional items included in these guidelines are evaluation worksheets and charts for calculating data. (Bl)

Developing noise exposure contours for general aviation airports : final report by Dwight E Bishop( Book )

1 edition published in 1975 in English and held by 66 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report describes a procedure for generating noise contours around general aviation airports using three units of noise exposure: composite noise rating (CNR), noise exposure forecast (NEF), and day/night levels (LDN). The procedure is to determine the number of annual operations at an airport, and to apply a weighting to this number to account for such effects as multi-engine and nighttime operations; propeller and jet operations are considered separately. A series of noise contour maps are provided in the report for a wide range of numbers of annual operations, based on standard flight tracks. The appropriate maps should be selected (taking account of mixed propeller and jet operations, multiple runway usage, etc.) enlarged and combined by logarithmic addition of noise exposure levels to produce an overall set of noise contours for the airport. A microethnographic approach to the study of classroom reading instruction : rationale and prodcedures by Kathryn H Au( Book )

3 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 62 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper details how classroom reading instruction can be studied by using microethnographic techniques, wherein classroom events are videotaped and then carefully analyzed to determine their social organizational features. A short introduction to the use of microethnographic methods is presented, followed by an analysis of a lesson taught by a white teacher to a group of black students, which offers a step-by-step illustration of how patterns of teacher-pupil interaction in a reading lesson can be identified. It is suggested that the analysis of participation structures used to instruct students provides a means of relating data on classroom lessons to achievement and offers particular promise for the study of instruction in classrooms with low achieving students.
