And the academic records of these students will greatly limit their likelihood of acceptance and, therefore, their options for further education. But there are promising alternatives. And that's the good-news message from authors Gray and Herr. This timely book explores the choices available to students beyond traditional 4-year colleges, options that carry a much higher probability of success and are more accessible for students in the academic middle. 5 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 124 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Major elements of the British experience with career education from which implications for American education can be drawn are addressed in this report, which (1) reviews British research and theoretical literature pertinent to current counselor roles, changes in counselor roles since 1965, forces shaping counselor roles, relationship of counselor role to educational change, forces affecting the implementation of career(s) education and counseling, current assumptions underlying career(s) education in Britain, the role of the counselor in career(s) education, and techniques of counselor training; (2) reports on interviews with selected British educators, counselors, and counselor trainees with regard to the topics described above; and (3) contrasts the British experience in the areas suggested with that of American education during the past decade and draws implications for American education in terms of implementation of career education, counselor role, counselor training, and educational change. Twelve implications for American education are discussed in detail, with the suggestion that it may be useful for America to consider a new form of specialist in career education whose role might be as a curriculum, materials, and demonstration resource in implementing career education into various subject matter areas or through other school/community experiences. Controversies in the mental health professions by Edwin L Herr( Book )

3 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 90 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book discusses elements of six major areas of controversy which occur between different types of helping professionals. Theme 1 involves identity for the mental health professions. Questions are addressed related to the professional status of various mental health occupations, and who among them shall provide mental health services. Theme 2 involves how and where education and training occur across the mental health professions. Content and form as well as the "culture" of professional training are discussed. Theme 3 involves the credentialing of mental health professionals. Of concern are questions of occupational regulation, restraint of trade, practitioner competence, who will credential, access to certain forms of reimbursement, and other matters. Theme 4 involves legal and ethical issues in the helping professions. Among the major areas of controversy examined are those of the right to treatment or habilitation, informed consent, research use of clients, sexual misconduct, duty to warn or inform, and confidentiality. Theme 5 involves controversies related to theories and techniques used in the mental health professions. Particularly at issue are classifications of behavior, testing and assessment, and the biases inherent in such mechanisms from the standpoint of their relevance and sensitivity to cultural variation among clients. Theme 6 involves the economics of mental health professions, particularly fee-setting in private practice, third-party payment, and the costs and benefits of different forms of mental health delivery.
