"Le centenaire des Ballets russes a de nouveau attiré l'attention sur l'extraordinaire personnalité de Serge Diaghilev. De nombreux livres de témoins ont évoqué l'oeuvre de cet animateur de génie; on songe ici aux mémoires, en langue anglaise le plus souvent, de ses principaux chorégraphes et danseurs, comme aux importantes biographies récemment publiées. Tous ont évoqué les facettes de cette aventure unique où entrèrent à parts égales mythes, légendes, musique, chorégraphie et peinture décorative. Le propos du présent livre est tout autre : il donne à lire des documents originaux qui retracent le parcours singulier de Serge Diaghilev dès son apparition dans les milieux artistiques de Saint-Pétersbourg, capitale culturelle d'une Russie encore tsariste, puis son action sur la scène culturelle internationale. Ses chroniques ici rassemblées sur la peinture, le théâtre et l'opéra sont restées généralement inconnues à l'Ouest, de même que sa correspondance qui fait ici l'objet d'un vaste choix de lettres adressées à ou reçues de personnages aussi divers que Tchekhov, Rilke, Picasso, Braque, Falla, Satie, Debussy, Stravinsky, Poulenc, Cocteau, Lifar, Misia Sert ... Quant à son activité de directeur des Ballets russes, elle est évoquée par lui-même dans ses brefs mémoires, de nombreux entretiens ici rassemblés, parus dans la presse française, russe, anglaise ou américaine. Ces textes sont enrichis d'une soixantaine d'illustrations en noir et en couleurs choisies dans les grandes collections publiques russes, françaises, anglaises ou américaines. Ce livre est la version française de deux volumes parus à Moscou, en 1982, édités par les historiens de l'art Ilia Samoilovitch Zilberstein et Vladimir Alexeïevitch Samkov ; cet ensemble est largement enrichi de lettres et documents inédits. Cette édition a été préparée sous la direction de Jean-Michel Nectoux, musicologue, auteur de divers ouvrages et catalogues d'exposition consacrés, notamment, à G. Fauré, C. Debussy, S. Mallarmé, V.
