"This report is one of a set of five that constitutes baseline descriptions and initial analyses of a very rich dataset. The report covers four major areas of interest in the comparison of public and private schools: student composition within the public and private sectors, resources available in these schools, the functioning of these schools, and the outcomes for students in the schools. The data and the analyses presented in this report are from the first (1980) wave of a longitudinal study. The responses are from questionnaires completed by representative samples of approximately 58,000 students in 1,015 public and private secondary schools, as well as their respective school officials. Catholic schools, which constitute about two-thirds of the total private sector, and other private schools are separately compared to public schools in the report. For some analyses, two additional sets of schools are included in the comparison. These are 11 high-performance private schools and a set of 12 high-performance public schools. Findings indicate that important factors in bringing about higher scholastic achievement in private and Catholic schools than in public schools are the greater academic demands and more ordered environment. The overall conclusion is made that the factual premises underlying policies that would facilitate use of private schools are much better supported on the whole than those underlying policies that would constrain their use." --

Introduction to mathematical sociology by James S Coleman( Book )

24 editions published between 1964 and 1968 in 3 languages and held by 902 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mathematical models and computer simulations of complex social systems have become everyday tools in sociology. Yet until now, students had no up-to-date textbook from which to learn these techniques. Introduction to Mathematical Sociology fills this gap, providing undergraduates with a comprehensive, self-contained primer on the mathematical tools and applications that sociologists use to understand social behavior. Phillip Bonacich and Philip Lu cover all the essential mathematics, including linear algebra, graph theory, set theory, game theory, and probability. They show how to apply these

Parents, teachers, and children : prospects for choice in American education by James S Coleman( Book )

7 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 677 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sixteen authors, from many different backgrounds, offer their observations about American education and about American society in general. The articles focus on educational alternatives in the past and present systems of American education. Subjects covered include: historical perspectives on American education, teacher attitudes toward public education, parent and community views on education, cultural pluralism and education, the funding of public education, voucher systems, parochial education, and other opportunities for educational choice. Two appendices include a model statute designed to further integration and a friend-of-the-court brief filed in the Crawford V. Los Angeles Unified School District desegregation case of 1977. Parents, their children, and schools( Book )

8 editions published between 1993 and 1994 in English and held by 611 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Parental involvement with children at home, in school, and in the community is one of the most important factors in educational success. Yet we know very little about the most effective approaches to parental intervention. Moreover, not all parents have the same resources or opportunities to act on the educational expectations they have for their children. This book examines the resources available to parents and the actions parents can take to further their children's education. It is the first study of the subject based on major survey data, drawing from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 - a national survey of 26,000 eighth graders, their parents, teachers, and school administrators. The authors explore several important debates, including the extent to which parental involvement can mitigate the constraints of poverty for minorities and disadvantaged students, school choice and equality of educational opportunity, and the effects that school-sponsored activities involving parents have on educational performance. Certain to change the thinking of educators and policymakers, this book is essential reading for scholars and parents as well

Redesigning American education by James S Coleman( Book )

7 editions published between 1997 and 1999 in English and Undetermined and held by 446 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Drawing on several principles of sociological theory, James S. Coleman and his colleagues construct a new design for American schooling. The authors present compelling evidence on the deficits of our educational system compared to other countries, arguing that the problems are the result of inappropriate incentives for teachers, students, and parents. Asserting that most American school systems are driven by administrative needs, the authors propose school designs that would shift the focus to student achievement output as the driving force behind public education
