The strange non-death of neoliberalism by Colin Crouch( Book )

38 editions published between 2011 and 2016 in 7 languages and held by 530 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The financial crisis of 2008-9 seemed to present a fundamental challenge to neo-liberalism, the body of ideas that have constituted the political orthodoxy of most advanced economies in recent decades ... Colin Crouch argues that neoliberalism will shrug off this challenge. The reason is that although it seems to be about free markets, in practice neoliberalism is concerned with the dominance over public life of the giant corporation. This has been intensified, not checked, by the financial crisis and by an acceptance that certain financial corporations are 'too big to fail'. Although much political debate remains preoccupied with conflicts between the market and the state, the impact of the corporation on both [of] these is far more important today"--Back cover

After the euro : shaping institutions for governance in the wake of European monetary union by Colin Crouch( Book )

20 editions published between 1999 and 2008 in English and held by 367 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The introduction of the single European currency, the euro, draws attention to the institutional deficit of the European Union: the organizational structures and forms of governance within which central banks and other monetary authorities are embedded within individual states, are lacking at the European level. This gives unusual prominence to financial structures. While the contributors to this collection do not agree in their evaluation of this phenomenon, they agree on its importance, and analyse different aspects of it in depth. -- From http://www.oxfordscholarship.com/oso/public/content/politicalscience/0198296398/toc.html (Oct. 23, 2012)

Are skills the answer? : the political economy of skill creation in advanced industrial countries by Colin Crouch( Book )

29 editions published between 1998 and 2006 in English and held by 340 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This study of vocational education in advanced industrial countries contributes to two different areas of debate. The first is the study of the diversity of institutional forms taken by modern capitalism, and the difficulties currently surrounding the survival of that diversity. Rather than analysing economic institutions and governance in general, the authors specifically focus upon the key area of skill creation." "The second theme is that of vocational education and training in its own right." "Covering France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Sweden, the UK, and the USA, this book provides a unique approach to education and training within the broader political and economic environment. As such, it will appeal to students, teachers, and practitioners concerned with vocational training, human resource management, industrial relations, and the sociology of the economy."--Jacket
Citizenship, markets, and the state( Book )

14 editions published between 2000 and 2004 in English and held by 335 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"As the neo-liberal marketization of citizenship and the resulting processes of individualization proceed, debates on citizenship tend to flounder in outmoded ideological oppositions. By examining concrete cases and processes that accompany contemporary practices of citizenship, this volume brings analytical clarity to contemporary debates about citizenship. The state, the market, and the forum are analysed as competing fields of citizenship practice, and it is their complex relationship which helps us to understand the role and function not only of the debate on citizenship, but of the institutions and practices of citizenship itself in the contemporary world."--Jacket
Capitalist diversity and change : recombinant governance and institutional entrepreneurs by Colin Crouch( Book )

21 editions published between 2005 and 2011 in English and held by 308 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Over the last decade the neo-institutionalist literature on comparative capitalism has developed into an influential body of work. In this book, Colin Crouch assesses this literature, and proposes a major re-orientation of the field. Crouch critiques many aspects of this work and finds a way of modelling how creative actors trying to achieve change - institutional entrepreneurs - tackle these constraints."--Jacket
Making capitalism fit for society by Colin Crouch( Book )

19 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and Italian and held by 251 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Capitalism is the only complex system known to us that can provide an efficient and innovative economy, but the financial crisis has brought out the pernicious side of capitalism and shown that it remains dependent on the state to rescue it from its own deficiencies. Can capitalism be reshaped so that it is fit for society, or must we acquiesce to the neoliberal view that society will be at its best when markets are given free rein in all areas of life? The aim of this book is to show that the acceptance of capitalism and the market does not require us to accept the full neoliberal agenda of unrestrained markets, insecurity in our working lives, and neglect of the environment and of public services. In particular, it should not mean supporting the growing dominance of public life by corporate wealth. The world's most successful mature economies are those that fully embrace both the discipline of the market and the need for protection against its negative outcomes. Indeed, a continuing, unresolved clash between these two forces is itself a major source of vitality and innovation for economy and society. But maintenance of that tension depends on the enduring strength of trade unions and other critical groups in civil society - a strength that is threatened by neoliberalism's increasingly intolerant onward march. Outlining the principles for a renewed and more assertive social democracy, this timely and important book shows that real possibilities exist to create a better world than that which is being offered by the wealthy elites who dominate our public and private lives
