Education and values by Douglas Sloan( Book )

5 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 552 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Twelve essays examine the relationship between knowledge and human values and the implications of this relationship for education, particularly at the university level. Authored by professors of philosophy, intellectual history, theoretical physics, Judaic studies, political theory, social ethics and religion, the essays call for a new approach which reestablishes imagination, insight, intuition, and human values at the heart of reason. Topics include the significance of insight for science; the Western mind set and its influence on education; tacit knowledge as a rationale for liberal education; and democratic values and educational aims. Also, the ideal of a personalistic philosophy aimed at orchestrating the value experiences in life; education as acculturation and exploration; a methodology of teaching about the Holocaust; and the present state of universities as a result of being supported more by governmental grants than private grants are discussed. Other essays analyze the often neglected third dimension of education: developing the self-control and self-knowledge necessary to live in a society dedicated to freedom and justice (the first two are stocking the mind with knowledge and vocational/professional preparation); the relationship of humanism to problems of science and education; teaching ethics in the American undergraduate curriculum, 1876-1976; and William James as an educator. The Redemption of the Animals : their evolution, their inner life, and our future together ; an anthroposophic perspective by Douglas Sloan( Book )

2 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As human beings, what is our true relationship to the animals on earth? What is our responsibility to our fellow creatures? Douglas Sloan explores these and other questions in this important book on the human-animal connection. His explorations are based on personal experience and wide-ranging research into the work of Rudolf Steiner and others, including scientist students of the inner life of animals and committed defenders of animal wellbeing. In exploring these and related questions with the help of Rudolf Steiner’s work and that of others on the issue, we can begin to see the importance in our time of our relating to the animals in a completely new way―a relationship that understands and respects the animals’ inner spiritual being, and one that requires a deep grasp of our own spiritual being in relation to theirs

Knowledge, education, and human values : toward the recovery of wholeness by Douglas Sloan( Book )

2 editions published between 1980 and 1981 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report summarizes the papers and discussions of a symposium held in Woodstock, Vermont, June 17-20, 1980. The symposium was convened to allow 50 representatives from the worlds of academia, business, the foundations, and government to discuss two major topics. These topics are the relation between education and those dimensions of experience that give value, meaning, and purpose to human life and ways of knowing and thinking about the world that influence the relationship between education and values. A major concern of many symposium participants was that modern society, and, particularly, education, has become dominated by the view that we can know only that which we can count, measure, and weigh. As a consequence of this view, current conceptions of knowledge often give rise to views of the world that provide little support for human values and for an education in which persons and the values of persons remain central. Seven papers addressed these and related issues. Titles are, "Insight"; "Mind and the Meaning of Mystery of Personal Experience"; "Language, Consciousness, and the Recovery of Human Meaning"; "Beyond the Modern Western Mind Set: Toward a Living Universe"; "The Living Image"; "Cultural Vision and the Human Future"; and "Education." Among those themes which recurred throughout the papers were the proliferation of courses in elementary and secondary schools on moral development and values clarification, the upswing in the number of colleges offering courses on ethics, the inability of unquestioned presuppositions about what knowledge is true and/or important to explain reality, the need to nourish the imagining capacity of the mind, realization that modern Western thinking is beset with limitations regarding assumptions about knowledge, and the need to go beyond the premises of a world constructed according to the premises of scientific naturalism. A directory of symposium participants concludes the report. (Db)

Throughout his life, Rudolf Steiner stressed repeatedly that the most crucial task facing the modern human being is that of transforming our dominant ways of knowing the world. This emphasis is the red thread that runs through and connects all of Rudolf Steiner's writings, lectures, artistic work, and practical endeavors. In his introduction to this important collection of articles, Douglas Sloan reflects further on the pressing urgency of our developing capacities for knowledge of the qualities of the world - life, beauty, meaning, value, selves, spirit - not only for a rich, meaningful human society and culture but also for the future of the earth
