A mathematical introduction to string theory : variational problems, geometric and probabilistic methods by
Sergio Albeverio(
)
24 editions published between 1996 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,625 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Classical string theory is concerned with the propagation of classical 1dimensional curves 'strings', and the theory has connections to the calculus of variations, minimal surfaces and harmonic maps. The quantization of string theory gives rise to problems in different areas, according to the method used. The representation theory of Lie, KacMoody and Virasoro algebras have been used for such quantization. In this lecture note the authors give an introduction to certain global analytic and probabilistic aspects of string theory. It is their intention to bring together, and make explicit the necessary mathematical tools. Researchers with an interest in string theory, in either mathematics or theoretical physics, will find this a stimulating volume

Extreme events in nature and society by
Sergio Albeverio(
)
25 editions published between 2005 and 2011 in English and held by 894 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Presents unifying and distinguishing features of extreme events, including problems of understanding and modelling their origin, spatial and temporal extension, and potential impact. This book aims to help in the difficult problem of anticipation: forecasting the event and proposing measures to moderate or prevent it

Mathematical theory of Feynman path integrals by
Sergio Albeverio(
Book
)
31 editions published between 1976 and 2008 in English and German and held by 643 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Feynman path integrals integrals, suggested heuristically by Feynman in the 40s, have become the basis of much of contemporary physics, from non relativistic quantum mechanics to quantum fields, including gauge fields, gravitation, cosmology. Recently ideas based on Feynman path integrals have also played an important role in areas of mathematics like low dimensional topology and differential geometry, algebraic geometry, infinite dimensional analysis and geometry, and number theory. The 2nd edition of LNM 523 is based on the two first authors' mathematical approach of this theory presented in its 1st edition in 1976. To take care of the many developments which have occurred since then, an entire new chapter about the current forefront of research has been added. Except for this new chapter, the basic material and presentation of the first edition was mantained, a few misprints have been corrected. At the end of each chapter the reader will also find notes with further bibliographical information

Of the three lecture courses making up the CIME summer school on Fluid Dynamics at Cetraro in 2005 reflected in this volume, the first, due to Sergio Albeverio describes deterministic and stochastic models of hydrodynamics. Solvable models in quantum mechanics by
Sergio Albeverio(
Book
)
25 editions published between 1987 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 553 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This monograph presents a detailed study of a class of solvable models in quantum mechanics that describe the motion of a particle in a potential having support at the positions of a discrete (finite or infinite) set of point sources. Both situations–where the strengths of the sources and their locations are precisely known and where these are only known with a given probability distribution–are covered. The authors present a systematic mathematical approach to these models and illustrate its connections with previous heuristic derivations and computations. Results obtained by different methods in disparate contexts are thus unified and a systematic control over approximations to the models, in which the point interactions are replaced by more regular ones, is provided. The first edition of this book generated considerable interest for those learning advanced mathematical topics in quantum mechanics, especially those connected to the Schrödinger equations. This second edition includes a new appendix by Pavel Exner, who has prepared a summary of the progress made in the field since 1988. His summary, centering around twobody point interaction problems, is followed by a bibliography focusing on essential developments made since 1988. appendix by Pavel Exner, who has prepared a summary of the progress made in the field since 1988. The dynamics of complex urban systems : an interdisciplinary approach by
Sergio Albeverio(
)
20 editions published between 2007 and 2010 in English and held by 547 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The present book outlines a conceptual framework for modelling and forecasting the dynamics of both growthlimited cities and megacities bringing together experts from several disciplines. The interdisciplinary point of view is particularly stressed. The contributions presented reflect the various interdependencies between structural (physics and mathematics models) and social development (spatial decision making and urban planning models). The volume emphasizes not only the contributions from different disciplines but also pays attention to specific problems like model calibration, data avail

This monograph treats the theory of Dirichlet forms from a comprehensive point of view, using 'nonstandard analysis'. Thus, it is close in spirit to the discrete classical formulation of Dirichlet space theory by Beurling and Deny (1958). The discrete infinitesimal setup makes it possible to study the diffusion and the jump part using essentially the same methods. This setting has the advantage of being independent of special topological properties of the state space and in this sense is a natural one, valid for both finite and infinitedimensional spaces. The present monograph provides a tho
