Cause, principle, and unity by Giordano Bruno( )

34 editions published between 1962 and 1998 in English and held by 2,285 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Giordano Bruno's notorious public death in 1600, at the hands of the Inquisition in Rome, marked the transition from Renaissance philosophy to the Scientific Revolution of the seventeenth century. In his philosophical works he addressed such delicate issues as the role of Christ as mediator and the distinction, in human beings, between soul and matter. This volume presents new translations of Cause, Principle and Unity, in which he challenges Aristotelian accounts of causality and spells out the implications of Copernicanism for a new theory of an infinite universe, and of two essays on magic, On Magic and A General Account of Bonding, in which he interprets earlier theories about magical events in the light of the unusual powers of natural phenomena
The Cabala of Pegasus by Giordano Bruno( )

10 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 1,619 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Giordano Bruno's Cabala del cavallo pegaseo (The Cabala of Pegasus) grew out of the great Italian philosopher's experiences lecturing and debating at Oxford in early 1584. Having received a cold reception there because of his viewpoints, Bruno went on in the Cabala to attack the narrow-mindedness of the university - and by extension, all universities that resisted his advocacy of intellectual freethinking." "The Cabala of Pegasus consists of vernacular dialogues that turn on the indentification of the noble Pegasus (the spirit of poetry) and the humble ass (the vehicle of divine revelation). In the interplay of these ideas, Bruno explores the nature of poetry, divine authority, secular learning, and Pythagorean metempsychosis, which had great influence on James Joyce and many other writers and artists from the Renaissance to the modern period." "This book, the first English translation of The Cabala of Pegasus, contains both the English and Italian versions as well as helpful annotations. It will have particular appeal to all Renaissance scholars and those interested in the Renaissance cabalistic underpinnings of modern literature."--Jacket

Giordano Bruno was as modern in this play as in his universe filled with inhabitable worlds. NASA is right now looking for the worlds Bruno predicted. But Bruno is downright funny in his play, as he is "dead serious" in the works for which he died. Here we're more likely to die--laughing. Bony thinks he's bedding his lover, but it's his wife. The scientist Bart spends every moment trying to make gold, until his ignored wife takes a lover. The teacher Manny reads his poems to his boys hoping to attract them as they attract him. How the boys defeat Manny is humorous. Several Naples street hooligans put on security jackets and steal from Manny and others. At least one character above is bisexual. Is this a contemporary play, or Candelaio from nearly 440 years ago? Bruno only wrote one play, the best first play ever written. Printed in Paris in 1582, the play waited four hundred years for the world to catch up to Bruno--not just in astronomy. Many know Giordano Bruno's martyrdom, but nobody thinks him outrageously funny, until they read this play, and this version
On the heroic frenzies : a translation of De gli eroici furori by Giordano Bruno( )

12 editions published between 2000 and 2013 in English and held by 799 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On the Heroic Frenzies is at once a philosophical dialogue, an anthology of love poetry, and a collection of sonnets, songs, and emblems – sometimes borrowed from other writers, but primarily Bruno’s own. Rowland’s detailed introduction and extensive footnotes highlight the philosophical sources, Biblical allusions, and biographical elements that make Bruno’s work both richly conceived and often challenging to understand. Providing cohesive insights into Bruno’s text, Rowland’s edition of On the Heroic Frenzies is a helpful guide for those new to his work."--pub. desc

Von den heroischen Leidenschaften by Giordano Bruno( Book )

127 editions published between 1585 and 2018 in 6 languages and held by 768 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Ash Wednesday supper by Giordano Bruno( Book )

27 editions published between 1955 and 2018 in 3 languages and held by 663 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Giordano Bruno wrote this dialogue in 1583. The Ash Wednesday Supper is concerned with two major themes: a cosmological theme concerning the new post Copernican astronomy and Bruno's infinitist reading of it; and the other a social/historical theme concerning the english society, both high and low, of which Bruno was a guest and with which he developed a complex and often conflictual relationship."--

Spaccio de la bestia trionfante by Giordano Bruno( Book )

96 editions published between 1584 and 2017 in 4 languages and held by 361 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
