Children's folklore : a source book by Felicia R McMahon( )

19 editions published between 1995 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 2,580 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A collection of original essays by scholars from a variety of fields-- including American studies, folklore, anthropology, psychology, sociology, and education--Children's Folklore: A Source Book moves beyond traditional social-science views of child development. It reveals the complexity and artistry of interactions among children, challenging stereotypes of simple childhood innocence and conventional explanations of development that privilege sober and sensible adult outcomes. Instead, the play and lore of children is shown to be often disruptive, wayward, and irrational."--Amazon.com
The ambiguity of play by Brian Sutton-Smith( )

29 editions published between 1997 and 2017 in English and Portuguese and held by 1,986 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sutton-Smith focuses on play theories rooted in seven distinct "rhetorics"--The ancient discourses of fate, power, communal identity, and frivolity and the modern discourses of progress, the imaginary, and the self. In a sweeping analysis that moves from the question of play in child development to the implications of play for the Western work ethic, he explores the values, historical sources, and interests that have dictated the terms and forms of play put forth in each discourse's "objective" theory

A history of children's play : New Zealand, 1840-1950 by Brian Sutton-Smith( Book )

14 editions published between 1975 and 2016 in English and held by 459 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When schools became more universal in the expanding industrial society between 1890 and 1920, a new emphasis on the control of children developed, and from 1920 onwards, adult supervision in the form of heavily organized sports and playgrounds encroached more and more upon the untamed freedom of the rural environment. The play of the children in the twentieth century has not always been voluntary, nor intrinsically motivated. From 1920 onwards such structural impositions as heavily supervise playgrounds, organized sports, organized mass leisure, and the panacea of television transformed and domesticated children's play. The author maintains that although children have become healthier, more verbally sophisticated, and more mechanically competent, they are much less physically and emotionally self-reliant. -- Book Jacket

What are toys? What do they represent beyond the literal image? Do they affect growth- are they learning tools, baby sitters, trivial objects with no particular significance? This book is the first systematic analysis of the role of toys in contemporary society. Employing history, anthropology, and psychology, as well as the first-hand accounts of players themselves, the author explores the myriad of meanings behind the toy.-- Book Jacket
