The fairy queen by
Henry Purcell(
)
339 editions published between 1958 and 2020 in 9 languages and held by 4,743 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In 'The Fairy Queen,' two artistic geniuses met. The scenario is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream; the music is by Henry Purcell, the greatest English composer of his day. The result is one of the first great operas, a dazzling display of music and emotion that has lost none of its power since its premiere in 1692. Much of the music has come to have a life beyond the opera itself: songs such as "The Plaint," "Thrice Happy Lovers" and "Hark! The Echoing air" now regularly grace the concert hall stage, a delight for singers and audiences alike. This studio recording was made with Australia's pre-eminent independent opera company, Pinchgut Opera, in 2003, and is re-released here in deluxe packaging. The cast features the finest Australian singers (Sara Macliver, Sally-Anne Russell and Paul McMahon to name but three) under the direction of Baroque specialist Antony Walker. The period instruments of the Orchestra of the Antipodes provide accompaniment of vibrant colour and immediacy." -- Jbhifi.com.au

King Arthur by
Henry Purcell(
)
198 editions published between 1958 and 2019 in 8 languages and held by 3,051 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Henry Purcell's "King Arthur, or The British Worthy," occupies the small genre of English semi-operas, i.e., stage works in which the most of the main characters speak dialogue, but songs, choruses, and incidental music provide commentary on the action. This 2018 performance by Lionel Meunier and the period ensemble Vox Luminis presents "King Arthur" without speaking parts, so the music is continuous and complete on two CDs, and displays the variety of musical forms and effects Purcell employed to make John Dryden's somewhat confusing play -- a mixture of Norse and British mythology -- come to life. The singing is lively and rhythmically precise, and the cast's diction is clear enough to make following the libretto virtually unnecessary
