Resetting the operetta in a mythical kingdom, Lubitsch also replaced the lightweight romance with a satire of government, society and sex. The lush Lehar music and romantic lyrics contrasts with the disenchanted dialogue. Singing dominates the first half, dancing dominates the second. Music brings Chevalier and MacDonald together setting them apart from the supporting characters who do not sing while at the same time supporting class differences - Chevalier's singing is of the music hall, MacDonald's is of the opera house. The grand design and minimal choreography reflects Busby Berkeley's influence but is not given over to Berkeley's celebration of sheer numbers. The dances are extensions of Metro's opulent design. Made just before the introduction of the strict new production code, in style and spirit 'The Merry Widow' was the last of its kind
Das Land des Lächelns by Franz Lehár( )

124 editions published between 1950 and 2015 in 5 languages and held by 1,033 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Franz Lehár developed the operetta far beyond the waltz-laden entertainment that was its origin; he orientated himself far more towards the opera. He took as his role model Puccini, as is evident in his Land des Lächelns (Land of Smiles), a bittersweet love story set in far-away Japan, and including the operetta hit "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz" ("You are my heart's delight"). Lehár's eponymous Tsarevich too is full of passion and melancholy, bursting with Russian charm. In Friederike Lehár tells the famous love story of the young Goethe and Friederike Brion with tender simplicity
