Bargaining : formal theories of negotiation( Book )

9 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 501 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In a volume which covers forty years of work on bargaining and negotiation and includes twenty-two contributions by the most prominent authors in the field--such as Frederik Zeuthen's theories of the early 1930s and Daniel Ellsberg's theory of the 'Relucant Dualist'--Oran Young evaluates all of the most important deductive models in the field, demonstrating their relevance for a wide range of political, social, and economic contexts, and emphasizing their ultimate application to real-world situations. Concerned with the potential of bargaining models as 'descriptive' or 'positive' theory in contrast to 'prescriptive' theory, Young views all of the theories as analytic techniques for coping with the problems associated with strategic interaction. He provides analytic and interpretative inroductions to each of the book's four parts: game-theoretic models of bargaining, economic models of bargaining, prospects for a unified theory, and manipulative models of bargaining. He also furnishes a general introduction and conclusion. Bargaining is common in a great many sociopolitical relationships, from the interactions of the members of family units to the interactions of nation states. Because of this widespread occurrence, there is a need for theoretical work on bargaining by students of all of the social sciences. In collecting and presenting the most important writings in the field, evaluating the prospects for further theoretical work, and clarifying several conceptual problems which commonly arise in analyses of bargaining, Young's book attempts to encourage this needed research. No advanced knowledge of mathematics is required to understand the essays, though a general familiarity with some of the principal techniques utilized in game theoretic and economic models is useful"--Publisher's description, p. Institutional dynamics : emergent patterns in international environmental governance by Oran R Young( Book )

12 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 313 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Young proposes a framework for analyzing patterns of institutional change based on the alignment of internal, endogenous factorsùwhich include flexibility, monitoring procedures, and funding mechanismsùwith such external, exogenous factors as the attributes of environmental problems, the political and economic contexts, and technological innovations. He offers five case studies of environmental regimes, governing environmental problems ranging from climate change to the protection of the northern fur seal, each of which exemplifies one of the emergent patterns he has identified: progressive development, punctuated equilibrium, arrested development, diversion, and collapse. --

Analyzing international environmental regimes : from case study to database by Helmut Breitmeier( Book )

21 editions published between 2006 and 2014 in English and held by 272 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Regime theory has become an increasingly influential approach to the analysis of international relations, particularly in the areas of international political economy and international environmental politics. The conceptual appeal of the idea of "governance without government"--In which a combination of different organizations and institutions supply governance to address specific problems--reflects a world in which the demand for governance is great but the familiar mechanisms for supplying it are weak. Most research on international regimes employs qualitative methods, often using case studies to develop larger theoretical arguments; but a lack of standardization makes comparative analysis difficult. Analyzing International Environmental Regimes introduces the International Regimes Database (IRD), an important methodological innovation that allows scholars to adopt a quantitative approach to the study of international regimes. The IRD is a relational database that makes it possible to compare records on specific aspects of a number of international environmental regimes that are coded using a single, well-defined set of concepts, definitions, and scales. The book first describes the database and discusses a number of methodological, technical, and architectural issues. It then illustrates the use of the IRD as an analytic tool, drawing on the database for descriptive statistics to evaluate theoretical ideas about compliance, decision rules, and the role of knowledge. A CD containing the full IRD data protocol and all the data currently in the database accompanies the book."--Publisher's website
Institutional interplay : biosafety and trade by Joy A Kim( Book )

9 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 208 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

International institutions and the consequences of their interplay are emerging as a major agenda item for research and policy. As governments enter into an ever-increasing number of international agreements, questions arise about the overlap of issues, jurisdiction and membership. Of particular interest to practitioners and analysts is how this mélange of institutions at the international level intersects and interrelates to influence and affect the content, operation, performance and effectiveness of a specific institution, as well as the functioning of the overall global governance context. Biosafety, an issue relevant to numerous institutions, offers a case study for exploring and applying interplay in practical terms.--Publisher's description

Post-treaty politics : secretariat influence in global environmental governance by Sikina Jinnah( Book )

5 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and Undetermined and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

La 4ème de couverture indique : "Secretariats-the administrative arms of international treaties-would seem simply to do the bidding of member states. And yet, Sikina Jinnah argues in Post-Treaty Politics, secretariats can play an important role in world politics. On paper, secretariats collect information, communicate with state actors, and coordinate diplomatic activity. In practice, they do much more. As Jinnah shows, they can influence the allocation of resources, structures of interstate cooperation, and the power relationships between states. Jinnah examines secretariat influence through the lens of overlap management in environmental governance-how secretariats help to manage the dense interplay of issues, rules, and norms between international treaty regimes. Through four case studies, she shows that secretariats can draw on their unique networks and expertise to handle the challenges of overlap management, emerging as political actors in their own right. After presenting a theory and analytical framework for analyzing secretariat influence, Jinnah examines secretariat influence on overlap management within the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), two cases of overlap management in the World Trade Organization, as well as a case in which the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) secretariat failed to influence political outcomes despite its efforts to manage overlap. Jinnah argues that, even when modest, secretariat influence matters because it can establish a path-dependent dynamic that continues to guide state behavior even after secretariat influence has waned."
