Following the money : the Enron failure and the state of corporate disclosure by George Benston( Book )

11 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 833 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A few years ago, Americans held out their systems of corporate governance and financial disclosure as models to be emulated by the rest of the world. But in late 2001 U.S. policymakers and corporate leaders found themselves facing the largest corporate accounting scandals in American history. The spectacular collapses of Enron and WorldCom - as well as the discovery of accounting irregularities at other large U.S. companies - seemed to call into question the efficacy of the entire system of corporate governance in the United States." "In response, Congress quickly enacted a comprehensive package of reform measures in what has come to be known as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ followed by making fundamental changes to their listing requirements. The private sector acted as well. Accounting firms - watching in horror as one of their largest, Arthur Andersen, collapsed after a criminal conviction for document shredding - tightened their auditing procedures. Stock analysis and ratings agencies, hit hard by a series of disclosures about their failings, changed their practices as well." "Using the Enron case as a point of departure, the authors argue that the major problem lies not in the accounting and auditing standards themselves, but in the system of enforcing those standards. Rather than attempting to craft a single set of accounting and reporting standards for all companies throughout the world, the authors advise policymakers to allow competition between the two major sets of standards: Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and International Financial Reporting Standards."--BOOK JACKET

Restructuring the American financial system by George G Kaufman( Book )

7 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 286 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In light of the periodic malfunctions in important sectors of the finan cial services industry in recent years, such as commercial banking, thrift institutions, and the securities market, numerous proposals have been developed for restructuring the financial system to improve both its safety and efficiency. Among the groups analyzing the performance of the financial system and recommending changes where necessary, has been the Shadow Financial Regulatory Committee. This Committee, which is described in greater detail in Chapter 1, consists of 12 independent banking experts from the academic and practitioner worlds that meet quarterly to analyze current developments in the financial services indus try and to make recommendations for improvements that would be in the public interest. The purpose of the Committee, its members, and a listing of policy statements are included in the Appendix. All but one of the chapters in this volume represent essays by indi vidual members of the Committee on issues discussed by the Committee at recent meetings and that, for the most part, resulted in policy state ments. They basically discuss the reasons for the policy statement adopted and place the issue in perspective. Where appropriate, the rele vant section of the respective policy statement is presented at the begin ning of each chapter. Each essay, however, reflects only the views of the individual author and not necessarily those of other members of the Committee or of the Committee as a whole

George Benston was a unique scholar whose research interests were as broad as those of any recent academician. While at Goizueta Business School of Emory University, George held the Miles B. Lane Chair in Finance, Economics, and Accounting. In terms of research productivity, he ranked among the elite in all three fields. This two-volume set contains 30 papers that were either authored or co-authored by George during his academic career, which began at the University of Chicago in 1965. George had over 100 papers published in professional journals and close to 50 in non-refereed publications. Needless to say, selecting 30 to best represent his scholarly interests was no small task, and a committee was formed to help in the selection process. This group included James Rosenfeld (Emory University), George Kaufman (Loyola University, Chicago), Larry Wall (Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta), Robert Eisenbeis (Cumberland Advisors), RashadAbdel-Khalik (University of Illinois), and Gregory Waymire (Emory University). The papers, published between 1964 and 2008, provide the reader with a fairly complete representation of George's academic work. It is unfortunate not to know which future projects he would have pursued, but it is safe to say that the topics would have been timely, important, and extremely thought-provoking. It is an understatement to say that George will be greatly missed by the academic community and everyone who was fortunate enough to know him

Discrimination in financial services : a special issue of the Journal of financial services research by George J Benston( Book )

8 editions published in 1997 in English and Undetermined and held by 43 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Equal treatment in access to credit has long been a fundamental social goal in the United States. However, despite the passage of several laws in the U.S. prohibiting discrimination in the provision of financial services on the basis of race, gender, and marital status, among other factors, questions concerning the existence of racial discrimination in such areas as home mortgage loans and small business credit continue, and confound public policy makers. This book is composed of nine articles and a panel discussion, originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Financial Services Research. These contributions explore the complex issue of discrimination in financial services
