"To study the economies of the ancient world, one must begin by discarding many premises that seemed self-evident before Sir Moses Finley showed that they were useless or misleading. Available again, with a new foreword by Ian Morris, these sagacious, fertile, and occasionally combative essays are just as electrifying today as when Finley first wrote them."--Jacket

Democracy ancient and modern by M. I Finley( Book )

75 editions published between 1972 and 2019 in 5 languages and held by 1,831 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This elegant and provocative book is perhaps more important now than when it was first published. The three essays that comprised the first edition developed a remarkable discourse between ancient Greek and modern conceptions of democracy, in the belief that each society could help us understand the other. To the original three essays, Sir M.I. Finley has added two that clarify and elaborate the thinking of the first edition. The two new essays, "Athenian Dialogues" and "Censorship in Classical Antiquity" combine with "Leaders and Followers," "Democracy, Consensus, and the National Interest," "Socrates and After" to make this book an unusual inquiry. Few contemporary writers are able to bring to the subject the depth of learning and the persuasive power of language that Sir M.I. Finley brings
Ancient slavery and modern ideology by M. I Finley( Book )

49 editions published between 1980 and 1998 in 4 languages and held by 1,828 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Slaves have been exploited in most societies throughout human history, but there have been only five genuine slave societies, and of these, two were in antiquity: classical Greece and classical Italy. In this major book, the distinguished historian Sir Moses Finley examines those two societies, not in isolation but in comparison with the other, relatively modern slave societies of the New World. Sir Moses considers how the ancient slave societies came into being; how they were transformed over millennia and in the long process that led to Medieval feudalism; how slavery functioned within the ancient economy and in ancient political systems, and how it was judged, socially and morally; and what modern historians have made of ancient history and why. Throughout, these topics are interwoven in a brilliant inquiry that is both historical and historiographical. (Book jacket)
Studies in Roman property by M. I Finley( )

25 editions published between 1976 and 2007 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,745 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The actual practice of the Romans with regard to property and investment must be distinguished from the formal rules of the emperors and the moralistic generalizations of the ancient writers. With this in mind the Cambridge Research Seminar in Ancient History spent two years examining various aspects of Roman property, investigating individual topics in greater detail than has been attempted before. The studies which make up this volume deal with Roman investment in property - scale and concentration of holdings, rural and urban property, methods of exploitation and how this was organized, and the extent of marginal lands. The editor has formed the volume into a coherent unit by eliminating excessive duplication and overlapping between chapters. The book is of particular value to specialists in ancient history, economic and social history and in Roman law, but also contains materials of interest to medieval and agrarian historians

Politics in the ancient world by M. I Finley( Book )

68 editions published between 1983 and 2016 in English and Spanish and held by 1,378 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The business of politics - the vital process of conducting government through the dynamics of argument, conflict and decision-making - offers us one of the most revealing areas of insight into any society. Sir Moses Finley's exploration of politics in the city states of Greece and republican Rome yields insights into the arenas of political debate which have made a major impact on our understanding of the ancient world. The early political involvement of the free lower classes, the effect of war and conquest on political stability, and the ideological pressures which influenced the course of internal conflicts are salient themes in this stimulating investigation of the nature of government in Greece and Rome

Ancient history : evidence and models by M. I Finley( Book )

36 editions published between 1985 and 2000 in English and held by 1,102 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a book about the study and understanding of the history of the Greeks and Romans ; about the evidence that is available to the historians and its severe limitations ; about the practices of the historians in dealing with the evidence, and about alternative procedures that might be attempted ; in sum, about what we can know and what we are unlikely ever to know. Thus, Sir Moses Finley states his purpose, with characteristic clarity, at the start of the book in which he distils the thoughts and conclusions he has come to after fifty years of teaching and scholarly work in history. His intention is avowedly polemical. In fundamental ways he challenges the prevailing tradition : the special status so often accorded to classical texts, for example, or the flaws in the traditional analysis of the Greek city-state. He exposes unacceptable assumptions in the traditional accounts of ancient wars and urban structure, and offers pointers to a more fruitful approach through models. Always the emphasis is on asking the right questions, to enlarge our understanding of life in the ancient world "as it really was". Professor Finley's book provides a keynote for future research in the field of ancient history and, at the same time, a liberating analysis of the problems of method that all historians face. -- Publisher description
