Politics of language in the ex-Soviet Muslim states : Azerbayjan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan by Jacob M Landau( Book )

28 editions published between 2000 and 2004 in English and Russian and held by 374 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book focuses on language politics in the six predominantly Muslim-populated republics in Central Asia and the Caucasus during the 1990s. Following the dismemberment of the Soviet Union in 1991, the six newly independent states - Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Azerbayjan - faced a plethora of political, cultural and economic problems. Their effors at de-russification (part of de-sovietisation) were conditioned by the pressures of nationalistic activists, held in check by government circles well aware of the continuing dependence on the Russian Federation, as well as of the presence of substantial Russian diasporas in each of the six states." "Based largely on primary materials in Russian and the national languages as well as on interviews, the book describes and examines the public debates and politically motivated attempts at promoting the respective titular languages as a step for nation-building in a multicultural and multilingual situation."--Jacket
Electoral politics in the Middle East : issues, voters, and elites by Jacob M Landau( Book )

13 editions published between 1980 and 2016 in English and held by 369 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Comparative political study of the Middle East got off to a late start. Unlike any previous studies in comparative politics, this book, first published in 1980, represents an important methodological advance in that it proceeds by themes rather than by countries, and uniquely focuses on three major aspects of electoral politics in three contemporary Middle Eastern states. The three countries - Turkey, Lebanon and Israel - are chosen because they are the only Middle Eastern countries with a tradition of free elections. On the other hand, they also display certain characteristics found in other
Atatürk and the modernization of Turkey( Book )

9 editions published between 1983 and 1984 in English and held by 357 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The papers in this volume were presented and discussed at an international symposium on Ataturk and the modernization of Turkey, which was held at Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in October 1981, to mark the century of Mustafa Kemalʹs birth. Scholars from six countries -- France, Great Britain, Israel, Turkey, the United States and West Germany -- examined and discussed Ataturkʹs lifework and achievements at the symposium, in an attempt to evaluate their significance for his own time as well as for post-Kemalist Turkey. It is our hope that this volume of proceedings will make a contribution to the understanding of the impact of Ataturk and his followers on Turkey in the twentieth century. -- Preface (p. ix.)

Comparisons are drawn between this study and the one conducted by Moshe Brill. (Author/AM)

Drawing on many years of research, interviews with educators and officials, and visits to the region, Barbara Kellner-Heinkele and Jacob M. Landau explore the politics of language and its intersection with identity in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Ky
Exploring Ottoman and Turkish history by Jacob M Landau( Book )

7 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 116 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume brings together much important scholarship by one of the world's foremost authorities on the Turkic-speaking world. It reflects J.M. Landau's interest in such subjects as nationalism and pan-nationalism (in this context chiefly pan-Turkism); political radicalism (the trio of extreme left, chauvinist right and militant Islamism), ethnic and religious minorities (mainly Jews, Arabs and Greeks); the impact of language rivalries on inter-community relations; and accounts of Eastern and Western travellers in the Ottoman Empire (largely from unpublished manuscripts in different languages). The chapters together offer a panorama of certain areas in the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey, seen in a somewhat different perspective from the usual ones of the historian and the political scientist."--Jacket
