This report presents recommendations of an American Association of Colleges of Nursing (aacn) task force which revised existing guidelines for nursing education. An introduction provides background information and notes major trends in health care and nursing. Also provided is a summary of the revision process which included two invitational roundtable meetings and regional meetings. The following section discusses the discipline of nursing and the role of nurses as a context for professional nursing education. The main section of the report addresses the essentials of a baccalaureate nursing program which are identified as a liberal education, professional values, core competencies, core knowledge, and role development. The professional values include altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice. The core competencies identified are critical thinking, communication, assessment, and technical skills. Core knowledge is divided into the following areas: health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention; illness and disease management; information and health care technologies; ethics; human diversity; global health care; and health care systems and policy. Finally, role development involves roles as: provider of care, designer/manager/coordinator of care, and member of a profession. The final two sections address teaching methodologies and future directions. Three appendices identify individuals and institutions involved in the Nursing Skills Project. (Contains 55 references.)
