This report presents recommendations of an American Association of Colleges of Nursing (aacn) task force which revised existing guidelines for nursing education. An introduction provides background information and notes major trends in health care and nursing. Also provided is a summary of the revision process which included two invitational roundtable meetings and regional meetings. The following section discusses the discipline of nursing and the role of nurses as a context for professional nursing education. The main section of the report addresses the essentials of a baccalaureate nursing program which are identified as a liberal education, professional values, core competencies, core knowledge, and role development. The professional values include altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice. The core competencies identified are critical thinking, communication, assessment, and technical skills. Core knowledge is divided into the following areas: health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention; illness and disease management; information and health care technologies; ethics; human diversity; global health care; and health care systems and policy. Finally, role development involves roles as: provider of care, designer/manager/coordinator of care, and member of a profession. The final two sections address teaching methodologies and future directions. Three appendices identify individuals and institutions involved in the Nursing Skills Project. (Contains 55 references.) Essentials of college and university education for professional nursing : final report by Washington, Dc American Association of Colleges of Nursing( Book )

3 editions published in 1986 in English and held by 68 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Essential knowledge, practice, and values for the education of baccalaureate-level nurses are specified in a report developed under the direction of a national panel of representatives from the nursing, health care, and higher education communities. The report, entitled "Essentials for College and University Education for Professional Nursing," discusses the context of nursing and its effect on education and socialization of the nursing student. Abilities that the professional nursing program should develop are identified, along with seven values, including altruism, equality, and esthetics. Examples are provided of attitudes, personal qualities, and professional behaviors that reflect a commitment to each of these values. Also identified are types of knowledge needed to: determine health status and needs by interpreting health-related data, set goals and a care plan and implement the plan, define the health learning needs of clients or groups, evaluate patient responses to interventions, provide care for groups of three or more patients, use an analytical decision-making approach, coordinate resources for providing care, collaborate with patients and co-workers, refer individuals to sources of aid, work within the structure of health care settings, show accountability for one's own nursing practice, serve as an advocate to ensure quality health care practices, and promote nursing as a profession.
