Buildings of Iowa by David Gebhard( Book )

7 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 489 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In Buildings of Iowa, David Gebhard and Gerald Mansheim trace Iowa's architectural history from the earliest Native American influences to the present. Divided into five regional areas -- Mississippi River East, Mississippi River West, and the Central, South, and North regions -- the book's entries within each area are presented on a town-by-town basis to include the full array of Iowa's architectural offerings in various styles. Whether discussing farm houses, barns, and silos or churches, schools, courthouses, and libraries, the volume shows how a unity of rural and urban is effectively mirrored in Iowa's buildings."--

Accents as well as broad effects : writings on architecture, landscape, and the environment, 1876-1925 by Schuyler Van Rensselaer( Book )

6 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 336 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mariana Griswold Van Rensselaer (1851-1934) is highly regarded among architectural historians for her 1888 biography of the nineteenth-century architect Henry Hobson Richardson. Less well known are her writings on architecture, decorative art, gardening, and landscape design, works that provide a rare view of cities and rural environments in turn-of-the-century America. Now David Gebhard brings Van Rensselaer's most significant writings together in one volume. An established critic in environmental and literary circles, Van Rensselaer wrote for the general public in such journals as the Century Magazine and for a specialized audience of landscape architects in Garden and Forest. She was a long-time contributor to American Architect and Building News, the first architectural journal in the United States. She is an engaging and accessible writer, and her articles on Frederick Law Olmsted and the Boston Public Library won great praise. Although the only woman in a field that was male-dominated at the time, Van Rensselaer was, curiously enough, opposed to women's suffrage

The California architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright by David Gebhard( Book )

15 editions published between 1988 and 1997 in English and held by 273 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Now available in paperback, "The California Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright" (first published as "Romanza") is the first book to focus exclusively on Wright's commercial and residential work in the Golden State, from the 1909 Stewart House to the Marin County Civic Center designed 50 years later. These timelessly elegant and striking buildings -- 24 in all -- are known collectively as Wright's "romanza," or romance, acknowledging the architect's love for California. Each of these classic edifices dynamically demonstrates Wright's genius for reflecting and enhancing the natural terrain with his creations. Incisive essays provide a critical overview and history of each structure and are generously illustrated with photographs, floor plans, and Wright's own renderings. This volume is an essential visual reference work that will appeal to anyone fascinated by the oeuvre of the 20th century's most influential architect
