The age of reconnaissance by J. H Parry( Book )

136 editions published between 1963 and 2005 in 6 languages and held by 2,542 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Age of Reconnaissance, as J.H. Parry has so aptly named it, was the period during which Europe discovered the rest of the world. It began with Henry the Navigator and the Portuguese voyages in the mid-fifteenth century and ended 250 years later when the "Reconnaissance" was all but complete. Dr. Parry examines the inducements--political, economic, religious--to overseas enterprises at the time, and analyzes the nature and problems of the various European settlements in the new lands
A short history of the West Indies by J. H Parry( Book )

104 editions published between 1956 and 1994 in 4 languages and held by 2,073 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Since the first publication of 'A Short History of the West Indies', major political changes have taken place in the Caribbean area. The Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic ended in assassination. In Cuba, a drastic change of government was brought about by armed revolution. The Federation of the British West Indies broke up, and Jamaica and Trinidad became independent states. The second edition contains a brief account of these changes, and traces the story down to the summer of 1962: the eve of the discovery by the United States of Russian missile bases in Cuba, which brought the West Indies once again to the forefront of the international scene."--Author's note, p. viii
The Spanish seaborne empire by J. H Parry( Book )

84 editions published between 1966 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 2,036 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Spanish empire in America was the first of the great seaborne empires of western Europe; it was for long the richest and the most formidable, the focus of envy, fear, and hatred. Its haphazard beginning dates from 1492; it was to last more than three hundred years before breaking up in the early nineteenth century in civil wars between rival generals and "liberators." Parry presents a broad picture of the conquests of Cortes and Pizarro and of the economic and social consequences in Spain of the effort to maintain control of vast holdings. He probes the complex administration of the empire, its economy, social structure, the influence of the Church, the destruction of the Indian cultures and the effect of their decline on Spanish policy. As we approach the quincentenary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas, Parry provides the historical basis for a new consideration of the former Spanish colonies of Latin America and the transformation of pre-Columbian cultures to colonial states

12 editions published between 1961 and 1966 in English and held by 42 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Beginning with an analysis of the scientific knowledge and technical limitations of trade, exploration and discovery in the age of the Renaissance, the author describes in turn the Portuguese and Spanish discoveries, the organization of their empires for trade and government, the attempts of the Northern Europeans to penetrate through America or find markets and sources of supply in it, the struggle of the Dutch with their rivals in the East and of the English with their rivals in the West, and their culmination in the War of the Spanish Succession. The economic mysteries are lucidly explained, the human drama never forgotten; Albuquerque and the Jesuits, Magellan and Coen are as luminously delineated as the economics of spices and sugar, company finance and slavery
