The way we think : conceptual blending and the mind's hidden complexities by Gilles Fauconnier( Book )

29 editions published between 2002 and 2010 in English and Spanish and held by 902 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Until recently, cognitive science has focused on such mental functions as problem solving, grammar, and pattern recognition - the functions, in other words, in which the human mind most resembles a computer. But human beings are more than computers: We invent new meanings, make discoveries, have new ideas that never existed before, and use our powerful imaginations routinely in everyday life. Cognitive science, at last, is focusing on these mysterious, creative aspects of the mind." "A major statement by two of the world's leading cognitive scientists, The Way We Think is an analysis of the imaginative nature of the human mind. The research program of conceptual blending is already widely known; this book, written to be accessible to lay readers and students as well as interested scientists, is its definitive statement. Gilles Fauconnier and Mark Turner show that conceptual blending is at the root of the cognitively modern human mind - the mind that human beings have worked with since the Upper Paleolithic Age. Conceptual blends themselves are repeatedly blended and reblended by people and their cultures to create the rich fabric of the way we live. Learning and navigating these blends is the crucial mental activity of the developing child."--Jacket
Mental spaces : aspects of meaning construction in natural language by Gilles Fauconnier( Book )

52 editions published between 1924 and 2010 in English and French and held by 798 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mental Spaces is the classic introduction to the study of mental spaces and conceptual projection, as revealed through the structure and use of language. It examines in detail the dynamic construction of connected domains as discourse unfolds. The discovery of mental space organization has modified our conception of language and thought: powerful and uniform accounts of superficially disparate phenomena have become available in the areas of reference, presupposition projection, counterfactual and analogical reasoning, metaphor and metonymy, and time and aspect in discourse. The present work lays the foundation for this research. It uncovers simple and general principles that lie behind the awesome complexity of everyday logic
Mappings in thought and language by Gilles Fauconnier( Book )

33 editions published between 1977 and 2010 in English and Japanese and held by 623 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Meaning in everyday thought and language is constructed at lightning speed. We are not conscious of the staggering complexity of the cognitive operations that drive our simplest behavior. This book examines a central component of meaning construction; the mappings that link mental spaces. A deep result of the research is the fact that the same principles operate at the highest levels of scientific, artistic, and literary thought as do the lower levels of elementary understanding and sentence meaning. Some key cognitive operations are analogical mappings, conceptual integration and blending, discourse management, induction, and recursion. The analyses are based on a rich array of attested data in ordinary language, humor, action and design, science, and narratives. Phenomena that receive attention include counterfactuals; time, tense, and mood; opacity; metaphor; fictive motion; grammatical constructions; and quantification over cognitive domains

Ten lectures on cognitive construction of meaning by Gilles Fauconnier( )

10 editions published between 2010 and 2018 in English and held by 92 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"As we think and talk, rich arrays of mental spaces and connections between them are constructed unconsciously. Conceptual integration of mental spaces leads to new meaning, global insight, and compressions useful for memory and creativity. A powerful aspect of conceptual integration networks is the dynamic emergence of novel structure in all areas of human life (science, religion, art, ...). The emergence of complex metaphors creates our conceptualization of time. The same operations play a role in material culture generally. Technology evolves to produce cultural human artefacts such as watches, gauges, compasses, airplane cockpit displays, with structure specifically designed to match conceptual inputs and integrate with them into stable blended frames of perception and action that can be memorized, learned by new generations, and thus culturally transmitted"--
