The Spiritual in art : abstract painting 1890-1985 by Maurice Tuchman( Book )

11 editions published in 1986 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,382 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Traces the use of geometric signs by the Nabis and other French artists and relates this to the development of abstraction. The author describes some of the sources of ideas about the symbolism of geometric signs, in particular the writings of Helena P. Blavatsky, and traces the impact of these on the Nabis, possibly through the stimulus of Gauguin whose paintings from his Brittany period encouraged a mystical conception of art in which sacred geometry figured as one component. He goes on to discuss in detail the paintings of Paul Serusier, Paul Ranson, Maurice Denis, Charles Filiger, Jean Delville, Frantisek Kupka and Mondrian
Piet Mondrian, 1872-1944 by Piet Mondrian( Book )

15 editions published in 1995 in 3 languages and held by 508 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Yve-Alain Bois's major essay on the artist's career focuses especially on the invention and development of Mondrian's neoplastic style. In examining the parallel evolution of the artist's theory and his art, Bois supports the painter's own rejection of any interpretation of his abstract work as either geometric or symbolic, and demonstrates that far from constituting a formal exercise, neoplasticism offered an entirely new articulation of painting and thought. Bois pays particular attention to the late work and to the ways in which the artist conceived it as a critique of his earlier achievements. Hans Janssen explores the relationship between theory and practice in Mondrian's neoplasticism. From the early landscapes and throughout the mature career, he sees a fundamental continuity in the role of the symbolic
Alice Neel : painter of modern life by Alice Neel( Book )

4 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 341 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This insightful catalogue examines anew the full range of Alice Neel's (1900-1984) celebrated paintings of people, still life, and cityscapes. Featuring around seventy paintings spanning the entire length of her career, this handsome book accompanies a major retrospective of her work, and reveals her underlying interest in the history of photography, German painting of the 1920s, and other artists, such as Van Gogh and Cezanne, all of which provided an important precedent for the veracity and raw emotional intensity of her figurative works. Neel is renowned for her visual acuity and psychological depth, and her portraits and nude paintings of friends, family, strangers, and prominent cultural figures alike convey an incredibly consistent intimacy regardless of the relationship to her subject. The accompanying essays trace the trajectory of Neel's artistic language as it evolved alongside contemporaneous trends in the New York City art world and examines the manner in which her own work figured into the social and cultural contexts of her time. Created over a sixty year period, Neel's oeuvre offers a remarkably expressive document of the specific milieus she navigated through and ultimately transcends the marker of time altogether. 0Exhibition: Ateneum Art Museum, Helsinki, Finland (06-10.2016) / Gemeente Museum, The Hague, The Netherlands (11.2016-02.2017) / Fondation Vincent van Gogh, Arles, France (03-09.2017) / Deichtorhallen, Hamburg, Germany (10.2017-01.2018)

Inside out Victory boogie woogie( Book )

3 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 164 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"An arresting piece in his signature primary color palette, The Victory Boogie Woogie is the final work by abstract painter Piet Mondrian (1872?1944). An important contributor to the De Stijl movement, Mondrian died before he could finish the painting, leaving swathes of unpainted canvas and many unanswered questions behind. Inside Out Victory Boogie Woogie is a pioneering study that carefully considers every aspect of the piece, from the tiniest detail in the physical painting to the minutiae of its conservation history. Through the methodical examination of this singular painting, the editors are able to offer a detailed and nuanced portrait of the artist himself and the rest of his oeuvre. From an exploration of Mondrian's inspiration for the piece, to the sale of The Victory Boogie Woogie to the Dutch government in 1998 for nearly forty million dollars, which made it the most expensive painting ever bought in the Netherlands, this rich volume is a fully comprehensive history and analysis of what many consider one of the masterpieces of twentieth century abstract art."--Amazon

Constant : New Babylon. To us, liberty by Constant( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 156 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An open city without borders that is capable of flowing out in all directions to allow its residents to move freely and flexibly: this fascinating utopian conception of architectural and lifeworld growth formed the starting point for Constant's Situationist project New Babylon. Between 1956 and 1974, the Dutch painter and cofounder of the avant-garde movements Cobra and the Situationist International worked on numerous models, paintings, drawings and collages for the purpose of depicting his vision of the nomadic city of the future. This catalogue focuses not only on New Babylon's architectural aspects but embraces them as an artist's synthesis of the arts. Besides the models, drawings and collages, attention is also given to the designs in order to trace Constant's artistic process. This not only provides extensive insight into utopian urban planning, but to a greater degree into a mode of thought and imagination. The book includes an interview with Rem Koolhaas on Constant's pioneering project
