Italian Renaissance painting by James H Beck( Book )

25 editions published between 1981 and 1999 in 4 languages and held by 1,048 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This up-to-date survey of the finest moments in Western painting from Masacio through Michelangelo and Titian covers some fifty artists and their work and includes 450 color illustrations. Beck divides the period into three generations covering over one hundred years. The art is then distinguished between a more lyric or a more monumental vision, thereby giving a framework for the study and appreciation of the complex but rewarding material which has formed the basis of painting ever since. Attention is given to the lives of the artists in addition to their works set in the historical context. The book is accompanied by a bibliography and a glossary as well as an index for easy reference. -- From publisher's description
Art restoration : the culture, the business and the scandal by James H Beck( Book )

29 editions published between 1993 and 1996 in English and Undetermined and held by 796 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book deals with one of the most important and contentious issues in the world of fine art. Starting in the 1970s a mania has developed for restorations of works of art. London's National Gallery (first in this field by several decades), Washington's National Gallery, the Metropolitan, the Louvre, the Prado, the Uffizi, and others besides, are restoring their collections on a wholesale basis. Much of what is being done is radical and, in its effects, irreversible. Yet a generation from now, or less, the assumptions and the most advanced technologies of today may well be regarded as backward, misconceived or plain wrong."--BOOK JACKET. "The authors discuss the recent restoration of three Renaissance masterpieces including Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling, one of the high points - and perhaps now also one of the tragedies - in the history of Western art. New evidence is presented of what has been done, and why, and it is certain to be controversial. Also examined are the restoration policies of the National Gallery and, so far as they can be learned from what the Gallery is prepared to reveal, their effects. These will prove controversial too."--BOOK JACKET. "The authors enquire into the social, cultural and, increasingly, commercial factors that underlie the recent spate of restorations which have produced what amounts to a restoration establishment with its own networks, priorities and interests. Last, they offer hope not only that change is possible but also that the need for change is beginning to be recognized, and they put forward ideas for hastening the process."--Jacket
Three worlds of Michelangelo by James H Beck( Book )

9 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 726 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The personalities of artists often lie hidden behind veils of fact, myth, and hearsay. Seizing on clues found in hundreds of contemporary documents, many in the artist's own hand, a scholar-detective redefines Michelangelo from his earliest relationships to the days of his heroic labor on the Sistine Chapel. In James Beck's account, three men perceived and helped shape Michelangelo's creative powers. His stern father, Lodovico, instilled in him a rigorous work ethic. Their relationship, however, would be defined by bitterness: Lodovico longed for his son to train for a lucrative occupation, perhaps as a merchant or a lawyer, vigorously opposing Michelangelo's desire to become a painter. Even after Michelangelo achieved fame, he wrote Lodovico that "all the difficulties I have undergone, I always did for your love." At a critical juncture in Michelangelo's youth, support came from the most powerful man in Florence, the imperious ruler Lorenzo de'Medici. In his late twenties, Michelangelo began his third crucial alliance, this time with the recently elected Pope Julius II, in Rome. Three Worlds of Michelangelo offers an entirely new approach to understanding the mind, temperament, and sexuality of an unparalleled artist who, even in his own time, was called divine
