Ficciones by Jorge Luis Borges( Book )

550 editions published between 1944 and 2014 in 17 languages and held by 5,587 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The seventeen pieces in Ficciones demonstrate the gargantuan powers of imagination, intelligence, and style of one of the greatest writers of this or any other century. Borges sends us on a journey into a compelling, bizarre, and profoundly resonant realm; we enter the fearful sphere of Pascal's abyss, the surreal and literal labyrinth of books, and the iconography of eternal return. More playful and approachable than the fictions themselves are Borges's Prologues, brief elucidations that offer the uninitiated a passageway into the whirlwind of Borges's genius and mirror the precision and potency of his intellect and inventiveness, his piercing irony, his skepticism, and his obsession with fantasy. To enter the worlds in Ficciones is to enter the mind of Jorge Luis Borges, wherein lies Heaven, Hell, and everything in between

A universal history of infamy by Jorge Luis Borges( Book )

247 editions published between 1935 and 2014 in 14 languages and held by 2,629 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In his writing, Borges always combined high seriousness with a wicked sense of fun. Here he reveals his delight in re-creating (or making up) colorful stories from the Orient, the Islamic world, and the Wild West, as well as his horrified fascination with knife fights, political and personal betrayal, and bloodthirsty revenge. Spark-ling with the sheer exuberant pleasure of story-telling, this collection marked the emergence of an utterly distinctive literary voice

The book of imaginary beings by Jorge Luis Borges( Book )

45 editions published between 1967 and 2006 in English and Spanish and held by 2,240 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The book of imaginary beings is Borges's whimsical compendium of more than a hundred of "the strange creatures conceived down through history by the human imagination." Imbued with Borges's characteristic wit and erudition, this unique contribution to fantasy literature ranges widely across the world's mythologies and literatures to bring together in one delightful encyclopedia the fantastical inventions drawn from the Kabbalah, Homer, Pliny, Confucius, Shakespeare, Lewis Carroll, and C.S. Lewis, among others. Here readers will find the familiar and expected Dragons and Centaurs, Unicorns and Gnomes, as well as the less familiar and altogether unexpected Animals That Live in the Mirror, The Elephant That Prefigured the Birth of Buddha, the Hairy Beast of La Ferte-Bernard, and other undeniably curious creatures. Throughout, Borges's cunning and humorous commentary is sheer delight." "For this new illustrated edition of The Book of Imaginary Beings, Viking has paired Andrew Hurley, the acclaimed translator of Borges's Collected Fictions, with award-winning illustrator Peter Sis, whose original drawings appear throughout the book. The result is a wonderful work - an Alice-Through-the-Looking-Glass menagerie, which should appeal to fantasy fans of all stripes and ages."--Jacket

The seven lectures which make up this volume were delivered by Borges in Buenos Aires at the Teatro Coliseo, at intervals between June and August 1977. In an Epilogue to the first Spanish edition of the book, published in Mexico in 1980, Roy Bartholomew tells how the lectures were widely taped, appeared later as pirated records, and were widely in a cut and mangled form, in the literary supplement of a Buenos Aires newspaper

This craft of verse by Jorge Luis Borges( Book )

55 editions published between 2000 and 2012 in 10 languages and held by 1,414 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Though his avowed topic is poetry, Borges explores subjects ranging from prose forms (especially the novel), literary history, and translation theory to philosophical aspects of literature in particular and communication in general. Probably the best-read citizen of the globe in his day, he draws on a wealth of examples from literature in modern and medieval English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Greek, Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, and Chinese, speaking with characteristic eloquence on Plato, the Norse Kenningar, Byron, Poe, Chesterton, Joyce, and Frost, as well as on translations of Homer, the Bible, and the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam."--Jacket

Six problems for Don Isidro Parodi by Jorge Luis Borges( Book )

97 editions published between 1942 and 2013 in 12 languages and held by 1,142 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In an unusual twist on the traditional armchair detective, Don Isidoro Parodi, jailbird and former barbershop owner, unravels each mystery brought to his cell by a host of flamboyant characters, parodies of different elements of Argentinean society. Among these, an easily duped journalist, an actor who gives a new meaning to egotism, and members of a Buenos Aires literary circle, each more absurd than the next, are some of the clientele who stop by the prison to see if don Ididoro is "in" for a consult. As with most of Borges' fiction, there are ample literary references; these add to the unrelenting and cutting humor wielded against Argentinean intellectuals, but the characters speak for themselves. Some of the plots are as farfetched as the characters, including a diamond stolen from Russian royalty and a precious stone lifted from a Chinese temple; others, such as "Free Will and the Commendatore," underscore philosophical problems. The stories are playful even when they are serious; H. Bustos Domecq does not miss an opportunity to poke fun at the characters, and the authors, Borges and Casares, take every chance to make much of Bustos Domecq, their illustrious pseudonym
El informe de Brodie by Jorge Luis Borges( Book )

176 editions published between 1960 and 2012 in 14 languages and held by 1,135 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
