This publication examines global problems facing the United States and offers a specific short-term program of action to deal with some of the problems. There are three major parts. Part I describes political and economic developments in both rich and poor countries and comments on the recent record of the United States in its relationships with the Third World. To its credit, the United States has focused on certain issues of concern to developing countries and has produced some highly positive results. Examples include the Panama Canal Treaty, American efforts to reach peaceful settlements to conflicts in the Middle East and Southern Africa, and the strong emphasis on human political rights. But in areas such as trade liberalization, commodities, developing finance, energy policy and food policy, the U.S. record has not been as positive. Part ii explores in some detail the major common challenges that face both developed and developing nations during the 1980s and beyond. These challenges include trade; industrial production and growth; the monetary system and financial flows; energy; food; raw materials; population development; employment and international migration; and a commitment to meet basic human needs. Part iii suggests a program of action for the United States. U.S. policymakers need to reach consensus on a broader definition of "national security," to identify what the United States itself needs from changes in the international economic order, and to shape a new style of leadership that recognizes and addresses domestic constraints on articulating and implementing a comprehensive development cooperation policy. Third World women speak out : interviews in six countries on change, development, and basic needs by Perdita Huston( Book )

8 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 684 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Third World women speak out, a collaborative venture of the Agency for International Development Office of Women in Development, the International Center for Research on Women, and the Overseas Development Council, is part of a continuing effort by these agencies to prepare and publish materials illustrating women's roles and status in the developing world. Its focus is on women at the grassroots and their direct expression of their own ideas on change, development, and basic needs. It is based on materials gathered by Perdita Huston in six developing countries, in the course of a study of women's views on family planning, published by the Epoch B Foundation in 1978 as Message from the Village. In this book Huston expands the scope of her reporting to cover women's perspectives on a wider range of development issues. While the interviews are unstructured in format and therefore highly personal, the book also contains a content analysis of the tapes, conducted by social scientists at the ICRW, which complements Huston's journalistic presentation. -- Review from http://www.jstor.org (Sep. 15, 2016)

This annotated bibliography focuses on the effects of socioeconomic development and cultural change on women and on women's reactions to these changes. It is an expanded version of one which was prepared for the American Association of Science Seminar on Women in Development held in Mexico City in June 1975. The objectives were to disseminate this information more widely and to provide an overall view of the present status of research in the field. The introduction that precedes the bibliographic material summarizes some of the areas in which research is being done and suggests directions for further study. The 381 entries in the bibliography are divided into nine subject categories including general studies on women in development, the impact of society on women's roles and status, women's behavior patterns and customs, socioeconomic participation of rural women, education, work and economic development, health and family planning, women's informal and formal associations, and women, law, and politics. Each category is subdivided geographically. Information includes author, title, publisher, date, and abstract of the contents. Annexes list other bibliographies and annotate special issues of journals and periodicals devoted to women and development. (Ck)
