Isaac Newton(
Book
)
139 editions published between 1704 and 2015 in English and Multiple languages and held by 1,049 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Unlike most of Isaac Newton's works, Opticks was originally published in English in 1702 [1704?], with the Latin version following in 1706. The work summarized Newton's discoveries and theories concerning light and color: the spectrum of the sunlight, the degrees of refraction associated with different colors, the color circle (the first in the history of color theory), the invention of the reflecting telescope; the first workable theory of the rainbow, and experiments on what would later be called "interference effects" in conjunction with Newton's rings. His discovery of periodicity in Newton's rings, which would later prove to be so useful to Thomas Young, led Newton to postulate that periodicity was a fundamental property either of light waves or of waves associated with light. Nevertheless, Newton preferred the corpuscular theory of light, with which he is usually associated, because of its explanatory value for certain optical phenomena and because it allowed him to link the action of gross bodies with the action of light. The first edition of the Opticks ends with two mathematical treatises in Latin, written to establish his priority over Leibnitz in the invention of the calculus.--J. Norton, 2006

"Before Isaac Newton (1642-1727) completed his masterpiece, The Principia Mathematica, he established his reputation with this treatise on the properties of light. Opticks provided a scientific analysis of light that became the basis of our modern understanding." "Based on experiments in which a beam of light was passed through a prism. Newton showed that white light was complex and could be analyzed as a blend of the various colors of the spectrum. Divided into three books, the first describes his experiments with the spectrum. The second deals with the ring phenomenon, in which concentric rings of colors appear in the thin layer of air separating a lens and an underlying plate of glass. The third book describes his work on diffraction. Also discussed is Newton's theory that light consists basically of "material corpuscles" in motion." "Though written for fellow scientists, this classic monument of physics is surprisingly readable and understandable by nonspecialists."--BOOK JACKET

The famous physicist Sir Isaac Newton lectured on optics from 1670 - 1672. He worked on the refraction of light into colored beams using prisms and discovered chromatic aberration. He also postulated the corpuscular form of light and an ether to transmit forces between the corpuscles. His "Opticks", first published 1704 contains his postulates about the topic. This is the fourth edition in English, from 1730, which Newton corrected from the third edition before his death

"Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) not only proposed the law of gravity and the three laws of motion, but he is also credited with creating calculus. Newton formulated the theory of universal gravitation around 1665. ... Book I and Book ll of Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica deal with mechanics. He began with definitions and axioms of such concepts as force, momentum and mass, and stated his laws of motion concerning inertia, acceleration, reciprocal action and reaction and universal gravitation: the foundation of classical dynamics. In Book lll he used the mathematical principle of the earlier books to 'demonstrate the frame of the system of the world.'"--British Library
