Chekhov's plays : an opening into eternity by Richard Gilman( )

14 editions published between 1995 and 1997 in English and Undetermined and held by 2,510 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Richard Gilman examines each of Chekhov's full-length plays, showing how they relate to each other, to Chekhov's short stories, and to his life. He also places the plays in the context of Russian and European drama and the larger culture of the period. Gilman interweaves biographical narrative with textual commentary and with a discussion of stage-craft and dramaturg - Chekhov's techniques for influencing viewers, the scenic framing of the action, and issues of genre and temporal structuring. Although previous critics of Chekhov have tended to view him as an essentially social dramatist or as an observer of the smaller aspects of existence, Gilman asserts that Chekhov was far more of an innovative playwright, a revolutionary, than has been seen."--Jacket
The drama is coming now : the theater criticism of Richard Gilman, 1961-1991 by Richard Gilman( )

11 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 1,867 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Presented here is the first collection in more than three decades of the writings of one of America's finest drama critics. Richard Gilman chronicles a major period in American theater history - the 1960s to the 1990s - which witnessed the birth or spread of Off-Broadway, regional theater, nonprofit companies, and avantgarde performance, as well as growing interest in plays by women and minorities and in world drama. His writing, however, is more than a revealing look at an era. It is criticism for the ages."--Jacket

At the heart of the White Rose : letters and diaries of Hans and Sophie Scholl by Hans Scholl( Book )

1 edition published in 1987 in English and held by 655 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The White Rose (German: die Weiße Rose) was a non-violent, intellectual resistance group in Nazi Germany, consisting of students from the University of Munich and their philosophy professor. The group became known for an anonymous leaflet and graffiti campaign, lasting from June 1942 until February 1943, that called for active opposition to dictator Adolf Hitler's regime. The six most recognized members of the group were arrested by the Gestapo and beheaded in 1943. The text of their sixth leaflet was smuggled by Helmuth James Graf von Moltke out of Germany through Scandinavia to the United Kingdom, and in July 1943 copies of it were dropped over Germany by Allied planes, retitled "The Manifesto of the Students of Munich." Another member, Hans Conrad Leipelt, who helped distribute Leaflet 6 in Hamburg, was executed on January 29, 1945, for his participation. Today, the members of the White Rose are honored in Germany amongst its greatest heroes, since they opposed the Third Reich in the face of almost certain death."--Wikipedia
