Redescribing Paul and the Corinthians by Ron Cameron( )

16 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in English and held by 1,399 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This second volume of studies by members of the SBL Seminar on Ancient Myths and Modern Theories of Christian Origins reassesses the agenda of modern scholarship on Paul and the Corinthians. The contributors challenge the theory of religion assumed in most New Testament scholarship and adopt a different set of theoretical and historical terms for redescribing the beginnings of the Christian religion. They propose explanations of the relationship between Paul and the recipients of 1 Corinthians; the place of Paul's Christ-myth for his gospel; the reasons for a disinterest in and rejection of Paul's gospel and/or for the reception and attraction of it; and the disjunction between Paul's collective representation of the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians and the Corinthians' own engagement with Paul in mythmaking and social formation, including mutual (mis)translation and (mis)appropriation of the other's discourse and practices

Sayings traditions in the Apocryphon of James by Ron Cameron( Book )

20 editions published between 1983 and 2004 in English and held by 376 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The discovery and publication of the Apocryphon of James from Nag Hammadi has significantly expanded the spectrum of early Christian literature about Jesus. In this informative monograph, which has been out of print until now, Ron Cameron provides a form-critical analysis which aims to clarify the ways in which the sayings of Jesus were used and transformed in early Christian communities. By recognizing the importance of this particular document, scholars will no longer be able to regard the synoptic gospels of the New Testament as unique or sufficient for understanding the trajectory of the Jesus tradition. The synoptic problem must now be seen as a gospels problem

Redescribing Christian origins( Book )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 162 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1992, a group of scholars in the Society of Biblical Literature began to explore the prospects and lay the groundwork for a new, collaborative project devoted to the task of re-describing Christian origins. They proposed a two-year Society Consultants on Ancient Myths and Modern Theories of Christian Origins, followed by a six-year seminar focusing both on the diverse myths of origin found in the writings of the earliest Christians, and on competing scholarly theories of explanation and interpretation. The bifocal approach was intended both to explain how and why certain myths got into place, and to clarify alternatives and points of consensus among the different methods and models that are currently being used to describe the beginnings of the Christian religion. They report their results here. Annotation : 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Redescribing Christian Origins. Society of Biblical Literature by Ron Cameron( )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this collection of provocative and ambitious essays, participants in the SBL's Seminar on Ancient Myths and Modern Theories of Christian Origins challenge traditional paradigms and reimagine the beginnings of Christian religion. Rather than assume that the gospel story has its foundation in the historical Jesus, a human encounter with transcendence, or the dramatic religious experience of individuals, contributors make use of social anthropology and propose that the beginnings of Christianity can be understood as reflexive social experiments. The first of three proposed volumes that launch
