Mind control in 1984 by Philip G Zimbardo( Recording )

1 edition published in 1984 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Tracing the concept of mind control or brainwashing from Orwell's Nineteen eighty-four through POW conversions, Patty Heart's defection to her kidnappers and the deaths at Jim Jones' Peoples Temple, Psychologist Zimbardo believes it is wrong to attribute brainwashing to external pressures. After outlining the steps in attitue change, he argues persuasively from research that real mind control is only achieved by internal needs. After exploring implications of these findings for electronic evangelism, the tape closes with three actual recordings from the People Temple including the mass suicide itself
[Rev. Jim Jones speaks to members of the People's Temple before the mass suicide] by Jim Jones( )

1 edition published in 1978 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Reverend Jim Jones speaks to the members of his Peoples’ Temple congregation in Jonestown, Guyana immediately preceding and during their mass suicide. Jones persuades his followers that they are in imminent danger from the Guyana Defense Force and need to end their lives and the lives of their children to prevent being tortured and killed by the GDF. Christine Miller debates with Jones, arguing against the suicide and suggesting alternative courses of action. Others speak in support of the decision and try to calm the crowd. Jones tells them, For God’s sake let’s get on with it. We’ve had as much of this world as you’re going to get… The recording becomes "Tape No. Q-042" in the FBI evidence file
