Twenty years after it was first released by Archiv in 1987, Trevor Pinnock and the English Consort's coupling of Vivaldi's Gloria and Scarlatti's Dixit Dominus still sounds new, vital, and even contemporary in this 2007 reissue. Pinnock's tempos are lively, his lines clean, his textures clear, and his rhythms crisp. The English Consort's playing is light, tight, suave, supple, and, when the piece calls for it, powerful. The Choir of the English Consort's singing is sensitive, strong, and excellently enunciated. Soprano Nancy Argenta is a standout among the singers, and the instrumental soloists, especially clarion trumpeter Crispian Steele-Perkins, are uniformly strong. Archiv's early digital sound was bright, deep, and detailed when it was first released, and because this is an un-remastered reissue of the same disc, it remains the same. If you want to hear a coupling of Vivaldi's Gloria and Scarlatti's Dixit Dominus, Pinnock's was then and remains now a fine first choice

Juditha triumphans by Antonio Vivaldi( )

Australia's most exciting opera company, Pinchgut Opera has attracted rave reviews since making its debut with Handel's Semele in 2002. ABC Classics has been with Pinchgut all the way, releasing all five of their previous productions on CD to critical acclaim; the magic continues with Pinchgut's performance of Vivaldi's Juditha Triumphans. Enter a world of musical ecstasy with the exquisite voices of Pinchgut and the subtle beauty of rare Baroque instruments in Vivaldi's gripping tale of virtue, passion and revenge. BACKGROUND Pinchgut Opera was set up to offer Sydney audiences a different experience of opera. It presents opera in more intimate settings, where the audience is closer and more involved than is possible in a conventional opera house. The most important element in Pinchgut's productions is the music and the music's immediate impact on the audience. Pinchgut stages operas that are not regularly heard, but deserve to be Juditha Triumphans devicata Holofernis barbarie (to give it its full name) was composed by Vivaldi in 1716 for Ospedale della Pieta, the girls' orphanage in Venice where Vivaldi had been violin teacher since 1704. It was originally performed with an all-female cast and, we assume, orchestra. The libretto was by Giacomo Cassetti and was based on the apocryphal Book of Judith. As it was a biblical story, it is technically an oratorio. Perhaps Juditha is not a story full of suspense and insights into the human condition in the way that Idomeneo was. It is in its own way a moving love story and very unusual, though, in the world of opera and oratorio in presenting a very powerful female hero

Vivaldi by Michael Talbot( Book )

1 edition published in 1978 in Undetermined and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Vivaldi has emerged as a major composer of the eighteenth century. Known as the Red Priest (for his striking red hair) Vivaldi left the active priesthood to teach music at a girls' school, shaping a group of charity pupils into a world-class performing ensemble. He became Italy's most sought-after composer, yet, unwise in business affairs, he died alone and destitute in 1741. This carefully researched text examines the life and works of this cosmopolitan musician
Vivaldi, genius of the baroque by Marc Pincherle( Book )

2 editions published in 1955 in Undetermined and English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Marc Pincherle's aim is to present the life and music of Vivaldi to those generally musical readers who do not claim specialized knowledge. He has made wide use of contemporary writings which are delightfully evocative of the Venice in which Vivaldi lived and worked. He follows the events of the composer's life and then proceeds to a detailed consideration of his music, discussing Vivaldi the violinist, the symphonist, the composer of concertos, of opera and of sacred music. Finally he describes the incalculable influence that Vivaldi exercised on Italian, French, English, and German composers, and most especially on the music of Bach
