In 2013 he earned the doctor's degree for his research on Bach. The Six Suites for solo cello are nowadays performed on a wide range of instruments and Tilman Hoppstock performs the Suites Nos. 1, 2 and 5. His large knowledge of the contrapunctal technique of Bach combined with his stupendous virtuosity on the guitar resulted in a recording of great musicality and sensibility

416 editions published between 1955 and 2020 in 11 languages and held by 6,886 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The foundations of Marc Minkowski's career lie in Baroque music, and he has enjoyed a long relationship with Warner Classics, but this Johannes-Passion (St John Passion) is his first Bach for the label. The work's terse drama--here presented through just nine singers--is ideally suited to both his scrupulous musicianship and his keen sense of theatre. The French conductor describes Bach's great masterpieces as 'a journey you have to prepare for meticulously, over a long period of time. You come back from it like an explorer comes back from Everest or the moon--transformed'"--Warnerclassics.com

Goldbergvariationen by

)
237 editions published between 1900 and 2019 in 8 languages and held by 5,977 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The German pianist Lars Vogt refers to this 75-minute work as a “sacred object”. It was 17 years before he was ready to record it. Informed by period performance practice but playing on a modern grand, Vogt uses very little pedal and keeps ornaments clean and graceful. Textures are transparent. The simplicity, wit and honesty of his approach makes this a wonderful addition to the catalogue by a versatile musician
