The sciences of the artificial by Herbert A Simon( Book )

124 editions published between 1969 and 2019 in 6 languages and held by 3,481 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Continuing his exploration of the organization of complexity and the science of design, this new edition of Herbert Simon's classic work on artificial intelligence adds a chapter that sorts out the current themes and tools -- chaos, adaptive systems, genetic algorithms -- for analyzing complexity and complex systems. There are updates throughout the book as well. These take into account important advances in cognitive psychology and the science of design while confirming and extending the book's basic thesis: that a physical symbol system has the necessary and sufficient means for intelligent action. The chapter 'Economic Reality' has also been revised to reflect a change in emphasis in Simon's thinking about the respective roles of organizations and markets in economic systems"--Publisher's description
Administrative behavior : a study of decision-making processes in administrative organization by Herbert A Simon( Book )

130 editions published between 1945 and 1997 in 3 languages and held by 2,659 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The aim of the book is to show how organizations can be understood in terms of their decision processes. The central point is that decision-making is the heart of administration. The language and conceptual framework for describing administration must be based on the logic and psychology of human choice, i.e. economic theory and psychology. Simon got a Nobel's prize in 1978 for his contributions to science within decision processes in economic organizations
Protocol analysis : verbal reports as data by Anders Ericsson( )

53 editions published between 1984 and 2009 in English and Undetermined and held by 2,552 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Verbal data is used to study cognitive processes in many areas of psychology. Here, the authors review major advances in verbal reports over the past decade, including new evidence on how giving verbal reports affects subjects' cognitive processes, and on the validity of such reports
Models of bounded rationality by Herbert A Simon( )

64 editions published between 1982 and 1997 in English and held by 2,206 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Offering alternative models based on such concepts as satisficing (acceptance of viable choices that may not be the undiscoverable optimum) and bounded rationality (the limited extent to which rational calculation can direct human behavior), Simon shows concretely why more empirical research based on experiments and direct observation, rather than just statistical analysis of economic aggregates, is needed.Throughout Herbert Simon's wide-ranging career--in public administration, business administration, economics, cognitive psychology, philosophy, artificial intelligence, and computer science--his central aim has been to explain the nature of the thought processes that people use in making decisions. The third volume of Simon's collected papers continues this theme, bringing together work on this and other economics-related topics that have occupied his attention in the 1980s and 1990s: how to represent causal ordering formally in dynamic systems, the implications for society of new electronic information systems, employee and managerial motivation in the business firm (specifically the implications for economics of the propensity of human beings to identify with the goals of organizations), and the state of economics itself.Offering alternative models based on such concepts as satisficing (acceptance of viable choices that may not be the undiscoverable optimum) and bounded rationality (the limited extent to which rational calculation can direct human behavior), Simon shows concretely why more empirical research based on experiments and direct observation, rather than just statistical analysis of economic aggregates, is needed. The twenty-seven articles, in five sections, each with an introduction by the author, examine the modeling of economic systems, technological change: information technology, motivation and the theory of the firm, and behavioral economics and bounded rationality
Organizations by James G March( Book )

91 editions published between 1958 and 2014 in 7 languages and held by 1,869 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This new edition incorporates a new introduction which places the material in its contemporary context, whilst still preserving the 1958 text. It examines such concepts as bounded rationality, satisficing, inducement/contribution balances, problem solving and uncertainty absorption
Models of a man : essays in memory of Herbert A. Simon by James G March( )

9 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 1,570 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Essays that pay tribute to the wide-ranging influence of the late Herbert Simon, by friends and colleagues.Herbert Simon (1916-2001), in the course of a long and distinguished career in the social and behavioral sciences, made lasting contributions to many disciplines, including economics, psychology, computer science, and artificial intelligence. In 1978 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics for his research into the decision-making process within economic organizations. His well-known book The Sciences of the Artificial addresses the implications of the decision-making and problem-solving processes for the social sciences. This book (the title is a variation on the title of Simon's autobiography, Models of My Life) is a collection of short essays, all original, by colleagues from many fields who felt Simon's influence and mourn his loss. Mixing reminiscence and analysis, the book represents "a small acknowledgment of a large debt."Each of the more than forty contributors was asked to write about the one work by Simon that he or she had found most influential. The editors then grouped the essays into four sections: "Modeling Man," "Organizations and Administration," "Modeling Systems," and "Minds and Machines." The contributors include such prominent figures as Kenneth Arrow, William Baumol, William Cooper, Gerd Gigerenzer, Daniel Kahneman, David Klahr, Franco Modigliani, Paul Samuelson, and Vernon Smith. Although they consider topics as disparate as "Is Bounded Rationality Unboundedly Rational?" and "Personal Recollections from 15 Years of Monthly Meetings," each essay is a testament to the legacy of Herbert Simon--to see the unity rather than the divergences among disciplines
The new science of management decision by Herbert A Simon( Book )

32 editions published between 1960 and 1982 in 4 languages and held by 1,385 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"My research activities during the past decade have brought me into contact with developments in the use of electronic digital computers. These computers are startling even in a world that takes atomic energy and the prospects of space travel in its stride. The computer and the new decision-making techniques associated with it are bringing changes in white-collar, executive, and professional work as momentous as those the introduction of machinery has brought to manual jobs. The invitation extended to me by the School of Commerce, Accounts, and Finance of New York University, to spend some weeks there as Ford Distinguished Visiting Professor and to deliver a series of public lectures, provided me a welcome opportunity to reflect about the organizational and social implications of these rapid technical developments. The lectures, slightly expanded here from the form of their public presentation, record the product--a very speculative product--of my reflections"--Preface. Public administration by Herbert A Simon( Book )

98 editions published between 1950 and 2017 in 3 languages and held by 1,110 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"At the time of its initial publication, Public Administration helped to define this field of study and practice by introducing two major new emphases: an orientation toward human behavior and human relations in organizations, and an emphasis on the interaction between administration, politics, and policy. Without neglecting more traditional concerns with organization structure, Simon, Thompson, and Smithburg viewed administration in its behavioral and political contexts. The viewpoints they express still are at the center of public administration's concerns."--Provided by publisher

Models of discovery : and other topics in the methods of science by Herbert A Simon( Book )

23 editions published between 1977 and 1979 in English and Dutch and held by 644 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In these essays, the author attacks the central problems in the philosophy of science from the viewpoint of a working scientist who relates the philosophical questions to methodological issues that have arisen in his own research. The essays deal with six main topics: the validation of hypotheses, the logic of causal ordering and its relation to the definability and identifiability of theoretical terms, the logic of imperatives and decisions, the structure of complex systems, the theory of scientific discovery, and the axiomization of scientific theories. He treats these topics in a unified way by employing the analytic tools of model theory and by putting the discovery of theories, rather than their testing, at the center of the stage. Questions surrounding the axiomization of theories are examined in the light of real examples (Newtonian mechanics and Ohm's law) rather than simplified, hypothetical ones. Formalisms are not avoided, but they are always used as a means and not as ends in themselves.--
