A fine example of early experiments in art-critical film by Carlo Ragghianti. It examines the work of this very individual master who was perhaps the first to exploit the subduing and soothing qualities of light. His ability to endow the world with majesty and calm has never been surpassed
Botticelli's Calumny of Apelles( Visual )

5 editions published between 1992 and 2014 in English and held by 128 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Italy was indisputably the cradle of Renaissance civilization, and Sandro Botticelli was one of her greatest artists. During the early part of his long career he was a painter of religious frescoes; in the mid-1480s he attempted a new concept in the painting of women, personifying the Goddess of Love and the Seasons, and it is for this that he is most famous; but at the end of his life he was influenced by the teachings of the reforming friar Savonarola, who denounced the corruption of society. Henceforward Botticelli abandoned the feminine beauties of his earlier work; his imagination became darker and more anguished, as we can see from his allegory of the Calumny of Apelles, one of his masterpieces. Calumny, preceded by Jealousy, drags an innocent man to the judgment throne of Midas; Suspicion and Deceit whisper in Midas's ear, while Remorse gazes downcast at naked Truth. How distant these impassioned mortals are from Botticelli's legendary gods basking in the sun. This is the best short example of director Ragghianti's pioneering 'crito-film.' All aspects of the film work like an in-depth criticism of Botticelli's painting
Fra Angelico by Angelico( Visual )

2 editions published between 1992 and 2014 in English and held by 126 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This film is preserved in the Roland Collection primarily as an example of early experiments in art-critical film by Carlo Ragghianti, who was to become one of Italy's most influential art critics and educators. The film presents a critical analysis of Fra Angelico's style, which blended traditional Gothic forms with the revolutionary ideas of his contemporaries, Masaccio and Brunelleschi. Director/Narration by Carlo L Ragghianti and original music by Giorgio Fabor. This film won the Exceptional Quality Award from the Italian Government

Michelangelo by Creighton Gilbert( Visual )

3 editions published between 1968 and 2014 in English and held by 125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Accorded divine status in the world of art, Michelangelo Buonarroti was a beginning and an end unto himself. Regardless of the media in which he worked - painting, sculpture or architecture - there is a breathtaking perfection to the finished product. This film marks the high point of the art film-making of Carlo Ragghianti. The most technically ambitious and innovative film on art in its period, Michelangelo is still unsurpassed as an exposition of an artist's vision in painting, architecture, drawing and sculpture. A camera was designed and built specifically for this film to achieve the sense of a completely free, fluid, infinitely varied viewpoint, weaving at will around the artist's forms. Our conception of the genius of Michelangelo is one of a master able to move between and within his various media, bending and twisting his forms freely into the dramatic contrapposto which marks the transition from late Renaissance to Mannerism. It is this soaring, spiralling fluency that Ragghianti's unique camera work supported by music by Johann Sebastian Bach conveys. ' ... absolutely new and hitherto unexplored possibilities of the film camera in the analysis of artistic forms' La Nazione, Florence. Leaves an impression of weightlessness, even brevity, as well as force' Corriere della Sera, Milan. 'We can feel the thematic and stylistic unity in the art of Michelangelo' La Stampa, Turin
