Berthe Morisot, Impressionist by
Berthe Morisot(
Book
)
5 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 1,374 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Morisot was a gutsy pioneer among the French impressionists. As a standard-bearer of the avant-garde, she created a scandal by helping to organize a public auction of their works, something very few artists had dared to do. Defying the advice of her parents and Manet, she remained in Paris when Prussian troops besieged the city. In her artistic technique she was no less daring. Around 1874, in pictures of tourists and yacht-filled rivers, she broke through to an abbreviated, shorthand style ahead of her contemporaries. Disregarding her own view that Monet had taken landscape painting to its farthest limits, her late oils of gardens are brilliant fireworks of color. This catalogue of a retrospective exhibition that is to tour the country stands on its own as a valuable study. What it lacks is a sense of the inner woman, a shortcoming that has bedeviled most books about her

Hatshepsut, from queen to Pharaoh(
Book
)
9 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 1,114 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The female pharaoh Hatshepsut reigned for nearly twenty years during Egypt's early New Kingdom in the fifteenth century B.C. First acting as regent for her young nephew/stepson Thutmose III, she in time assumed the title of king and exercised the full powers of the throne as senior co-ruler. In accordance with Egyptian tradition, Hatshepsut was often depicted as a male king. After her death, however, monuments bearing her image were ruthlessly defaced, and her name was erased from historical accounts. Hatshepsut's rise to power and the nature of her kingship have long been debated by scholars. This fascinating period, one of immense artistic creativity, is illuminated by this volume's rich presentation of monumental royal sculpture and reliefs, ceremonial objects, exquisite personal items for everyday use, and dazzling jewelry. Essays focus on influences from the neighboring Near East, Nubia, and the Aegean; the innovative architecture built by Hatshepsut; powerful figures in the royal court during her reign; archaeological finds from this period; and mysteries surrounding the destruction of Hatshepsut's statues and the obliteration of her name. The first in-depth treatment of the subject, Daughter of Re is an important investigation into the impact of Hatshepsut's reign on the history, culture, and artistic output of Egypt. ... Gauguin and Impressionism by
Richard R Brettell(
Book
)
11 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 986 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was introduced into the Impressionist circle by Camille Pissarro and contributed major works to five of the eight Impressionist exhibitions between 1879 and 1886. During these years he transformed himself from a banker-stockbroker into a professional artist and from a family man into a solitary searcher for artistic, moral, and spiritual truths. Yet this vital period of Gauguin's life has usually been dismissed as a mere prelude to his brilliant career as an anti-Impressionist. This illustrated book reconsiders Gauguin's apprenticeship as an Impressionist and reassesses his contributions to the movement through the extraordinarily subtle and beautiful paintings, sculpture, and ceramic works he created during the years before 1887." "Richard R. Brettell and Anne-Birgitte Fonsmark argue that Gauguin's Impressionist paintings compare in quality to those of Sisley, Morisot, or Cassatt and that as a sculptor he was second only to Degas. His sculptures and ceramics were even more searching and radical than his early paintings and are crucial to the understanding of his development. Gauguin grappled with the thorniest issues debated by the French avant-garde, and no member of the Impressionist group created works as enigmatic or as wideranging, both artistically and emotionally."--Jacket

Monet and the Mediterranean by
Joachim Pissarro(
Book
)
5 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 854 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
First invited by Pierre-Auguste Renoir to the Italian Riviera in 1883, Monet over the next decades crafted several magnificent series of works, remarkably different from the paintings that had established his reputation in the North. Here, assembled for the first time in its entirety, is the audaciously colorful group of works that he executed on the Italian and French Rivieras in 1884 and 1888, and in Venice in 1908. Arresting in their stunning color, dazzling light effects, and the sheer beauty of the land and the sea they depict, these paintings address in a new language the artist's ability to stretch his own pictorial boundaries. Now available in paperback, this new look at Monet accompanied the highly successful exhibition at the Kimbell Art Museum and the Brooklyn Museum in 1997

Modigliani & the artists of Montparnasse by
Kenneth Wayne(
Book
)
5 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 838 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Famous for his elongated forms, graceful portraits, and lush nudes, Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) is among the most loved of the extraordinary group of artists who lived in Montparnasse in the early twentieth century. Accompanying the first major Modigliani exhibition - culled from important collections in North America and abroad - in the United States in more than forty years, this book places Modigliani and his work in the context of his friends and contemporaries, all living and working in what Marcel Duchamp described as "the first truly international group of artists we ever had." The art is striking for its diversity: Cubist, Expressionist, and Primitivist, with Modigliani's art embodying all of these elements, in all mediums: painting, sculpture, and works on paper. The other Montparnasse artists featured include Alexander Archipenko, Constantin Brancusi, Giorgio de Chirico, Robert and Sonia Delaunay, Fernand Leger, Pablo Picasso, and Diego Rivera." "Moving beyond the artist's tragically brief life to provide a fuller and richer understanding of his art, this book is arranged thematically: the first essay explores Modigliani's relation with Montparnasse; the second addresses his relationship with the avant-garde movements and figures; and the third examines his lifetime exhibitions and their critical reception. These essays are illustrated not only with the works of Modigliani and his peers, but also with black-and-white photographs of Montparnasse and of the artists." "Also, presented here for the first time are excerpts from "Minnie Pinnikin," the Surrealist novella written by Modigliani's lover and model Beatrice Hastings about their experiences together. Hastings read excerpts from the novella at a literary event in Paris in 1916 and since then it has been considered lost. This striking volume, which includes extensive new documentation, provides a serious examination of Modigliani's work."--Jacket

Picturing the Bible : the earliest Christian art by
Tex.) Kimbell art museum (Fort Worth(
Book
)
14 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 807 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Picturing the Bible explores the origins and emergence of Christian art from its very beginnings in the third century A.D., when Christianity was an outlawed, clandestine faith, through the fourth and fifth centuries, which saw it rise to become the state religion of the Roman Empire. What images did the early Christians use to express their faith? Were they the first believers to part with Mosaic law by creating "graven images"? What Jewish and pagan sources did they look to for inspiration, and what new meanings did they invest these subjects with? When did they begin to depict the life of Jesus? This illustrated book addresses these and other questions both through new discoveries and a reassessment of older evidence." "The essays are complemented by extensive new research on more than one hundred objects, drawn from major museums of America, Europe, and the Middle East. Frescoes, marble sculpture and sarcophagi, silver vessels and reliquaries, carved ivories, decorated crosses, and illuminated Bibles are all illustrated in new color photographs, providing an unprecedented introduction to the earliest Christian art."--Jacket

Matisse and Picasso by

9 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 792 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"As Joachim Pissarro points out in the foreword of this volume, Matisse and Picasso's dense plot and rich narrative make this work read more like a suspense novel than a traditional art history treatise. Bois' thoroughly researched historical demonstration is supported by striking visual juxtapositions of works by the two artists brought together here for the first time, making this long-awaited study a major contribution to the history of twentieth-century art."--Jacket

Art and love in Renaissance Italy by
Beverly Louise Brown(
Book
)
8 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 713 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Many famous artworks of the Italian Renaissance were made to celebrate love, marriage, and family. They were the pinnacles of a tradition, dating from early in the era, of commemorating betrothals, marriages, and the birth of children by commissioning extraordinary objects - maiolica, glassware, jewels, textiles, paintings - that were often also exchanged as gifts. This volume is the first comprehensive survey of artworks arising from Renaissance rituals of love and marriage and makes a major contribution to our understanding of Renaissance art in its broader cultural context. The impressive range of works gathered in these pages extends from birth trays painted in the early fifteenth century to large canvases on mythological themes that Titian painted in the mid-1500s. Each work of art would have been recognized by contemporary viewers for its prescribed function within the private, domestic domain."--Jacket

Caravaggio & his followers in Rome by
David Franklin(

9 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 633 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The Italian artist Caravaggio (1571-1610) had a profound impact on a wide range of baroque painters of Italian, French, Dutch, Flemish, and Spanish origin who resided in Rome either during his lifetime or immediately afterward. This captivating book illustrates the notion of "Caravaggism," showcasing 65 works by Peter Paul Rubens and other important artists of the period who drew inspiration from Caravaggio. Also depicted are Caravaggio canvases that fully exhibit his distinctive style, along with ones that had a particularly discernible impact on other practitioners. Caravaggio's influence was greatest in Rome, where his works were seen by the largest and most international group of artists, and was at its peak in the early decades of the 17th century both before and after his untimely death at the age of 39. Not since Michelangelo or Raphael has one European artist affected so many of his contemporaries and over such broad geographic territory. Essays by an array of major Caravaggio scholars illuminate the underlying principles of the exhibit, reveal how Caravaggio altered the presentation and interpretation of many traditional subjects and inspired unusual new ones, and explore the artist's legacy and how he irrevocably changed the course of painting."--Publisher's description

9 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 619 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The brilliantly expressive clay models created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) as "sketches" for his works in marble offer extraordinary insights into his creative imagination. Although long admired, the terracotta models have never been the subject of such detailed examination. This publication presents a wealth of new discoveries (including evidence of the artist's fingerprints imprinted on the clay), resolving lingering issues of attribution while giving readers a vivid sense of how the artist and his assistants fulfilled a steady stream of monumental commissions. Essays describe Bernini's education as a modeler; his approach to preparatory drawings; his use of assistants; and the response to his models by 17th-century collectors. Extensive research by conservators and art historians explores the different types of models created in Bernini's workshop. Richly illustrated, Bernini transforms our understanding of the sculptor and his distinctive and fascinating working methods."--Publisher's website

"Lavishly illustrated with more than two hundred works, this book chronicles the history of the Stroganoff family and its collections. From icons, embroideries, and richly decorated Russian stonework to exquisite paintings and decorative objects produced in western Europe, these works of art, most of them never before reproduced, represent the highest level of quality and reflect the discerning taste of the Stroganoffs as both collectors and patrons. Of special interest are the architectural designs of Andrei Voronikhin, a Stroganoff protege whose influence can still be seen in St. Petersburg today." "This book, published to accompany an exhibition opening at the Portland Art Museum, Oregon, provides an opportunity to understand how one family helped to shape the culture of a nation."--Jacket
