Baudelaire's voyages : the poet and his painters by Jeffrey Coven( Book )

2 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 362 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Charles Baudelaire was not only a visionary poet, but also modern art's first critic. It is not surprising, then, that he produced some of the most visually evocative poems of his time. Drawing inspiration from Bruegel, Rembrandt, Goya, Delacroix, and other painters, and in turn inspiring such artists as Manet, Redon, Bonnard, Munch and Baziotes, his poetry links together an extraordinary range of artworks. Published in conjunction with an exhibition organized by the Heckscher Museum in Huntington, New York, Baudelaire's Voyages is an in-depth examination of a number of Baudelaire's poems and the art that reflected his remarkable vision. The introductory essay by Dore Ashton and the text by Jeffrey Conven reveal the correlations between the work of this extraordinary poet and the painters who influenced him - such as the seventeenth-century Dutch artists de Witte and Vermeer, whose ordered yet quietly sensuous interiors appealed to him enormously, and Goya, in whose darker visions he spied a kindred spirit - as well as those who came after. Cézanne, Matisse, and Motherwell, among others, all painted works titled after poems by Baudelaire. With its lavish illustrations, insightful text, and the inclusion of some of Baudelaire's most loved poetry in the original French and in ENglish, Baudelaire's Voyages is a fascinating exploration of the poetry of Charles Baudelaire and its effect on the world of art. -- from dust jacket

G. Ruger Donoho : a painter's path by René Paul Barilleaux( Book )

3 editions published in 1995 in English and Undetermined and held by 171 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An appreciative retrospective of the art of a noted turn-of-the century painter. A leading practitioner of the Barbizon and Impressionist styles dominating the progressive American art scene at the turn of the century, Gaines Ruger Donoho (1857-1916) has attracted little scholarly attention since his death. His work was exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon during the 1880s and attracted the critical admiration of noted artists such as James McNeill Whistler and Pierre C. Puvis de Chavannes. In 1889 he was awarded a silver medal at the University Exposition in Paris, one of the most important exhibitions of the period. Returning to New York in 1887, Donoho was associated with a group that included Childe Hassam, John Twachtman, Frank Benson and Edmund Tarbell, among others of the most advanced artists working in America at that time. Donoho's works were shown in numerous exhibitions at art galleries, academies and museums, and he became recognized as one of America's most promising artists. Among the first of the early modern American artists to move to Long Island, a significant venue, for the evolution of American landscape painting, Donoho continued to develop his art in a way that suggests the reciprocal influences of Childe Hassam, J. Alden Weir, John Twachtman and William Merritt Chase
