Heads we win : the cognitive side of counterinsurgency (COIN) by David C Gompert( )

6 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 1,831 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Current U.S. counterinsurgency (COIN) strategy has relied heavily on the use of force against Islamist insurgents-a tactic that has increased their ranks. What is needed instead are stronger cognitive capabilities that will enable more effective COIN against an elusive, decentralized, and highly motivated insurgency-capabilities that will enable the United States to "fight smarter." Cognitive COIN goes beyond information technology and encompasses comprehension, reasoning, and decisionmaking, the components that are mosteffective against an enemy that is quick to adapt, transform, and regener

Reconstruction under fire : unifying civil and military counterinsurgency( )

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 1,162 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is widely agreed that effective civilian relief, reconstruction, and development work can help convince people to support their government against insurgency. Knowing this, insurgents will target such work, threatening both those who perform it and those who benefit from it. Too often, the result is a postponement of efforts to improve government and serve the population until contested territory has been cleared of insurgents. This can lead to excessive reliance on force to defeat insurgents - at best, delaying and, at worst, preventing success. Unsatisfied with this general state of affairs, a RAND team with combined security and development expertise set out to learn how 'civilian counterinsurgency' (civil COIN) could be conducted more safely in the face of active insurgency, when it can do the most good
The effects of nuclear weapons by United States( Book )

27 editions published between 1957 and 2006 in English and held by 1,149 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"When 'The Effects of Atomic Weapons' was published in 1950, the explosive energy yields of the fission bombs available at that time were equivalent to some thousands of tons (i.e., kilotons) of TNT. With the development of thermonuclear (fusion) weapons, having energy yields in the range of millions of tons (i.e., megatons) of TNT, a new presentation, entitled 'The Effects of Nuclear Weapons, ' was issued in 1957. A completely revised edition was published in 1962 and this was reprinted with a few changes early in 1964. Since the last version of 'The Effects of Nuclear Weapons' was prepared, much new information has become available concerning nuclear weapons effects. This has come in part from the series of atmospheric tests, including several at very high altitudes, conducted in the Pacific Ocean area in 1962. In addition, laboratory studies, theoretical calculations, and computer simulations have provided a better understanding of the various effects. Within the limits imposed by security requirements, the new information has been incorporated in the present edition. In particular, attention may be called to a new chapter on the electromagnetic pulse. The material is arranged in a manner that should permit the general reader to obtain a good understanding of the various topics without having to cope with the more technical details. Most chapters are thus in two parts: the first part is written at a fairly low technical level whereas the second treats some of the more technical and mathematical aspects. The presentation allows the reader to omit any or all of the latter sections without loss of continuity."--Preface
The Armed Forces officer by Richard M Swain( )

7 editions published between 1975 and 2015 in English and held by 1,137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Initiated in 1950, this 2007 edition is the latest in a classic series of books of the same title. Journalist-historian S.L.A. Marshall wrote the first at the behest of Gen. George C. Marshall, who formed the great citizen army of World War II. The general believed officers of all services needed to base their professional commitment on a common moral-ethical grounding, which S.L.A. Marshall set out to explain. Ever since, these books have provided a foundation of thought, conduct, standards, and duty for American commissioned officers. Available now to the general public, this new edition takes the series' inspirational premise into the new century. It educates officers of all services, as well as civilians, about the fundamental moral-ethical requirements of being a commissioned officer in the armed forces of the United States. Understanding the common foundation of commissioned leadership and command of U.S. military forces is essential for achieving excellence in the joint operations of today's combat environment. This philosophy unites the officers of the uniformed services in the common calling of supporting, defending, and upholding the Constitution in service to their country

Military parents and child custody : issues, considerations, and cases by Rayan M Pauwels( )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 695 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The increased deployment of service members beginning in 2001 as a result of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom has raised difficult military child custody issues that in some cases potentially affect the welfare of military children as well as servicemembers' ability to effectively serve their country. Approximately 142,000 members of the Armed Forces (active, Guard, and Reserve) are single custodians of minor children. Temporary duty assignments, mobilization, and deployments to areas that do not allow the military member's dependent(s) to accompany them require the servicemember to have
Reference manual for the Ada programming language by J. D Ichbiah( Book )

42 editions published between 1980 and 1988 in English and held by 693 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ada is the result of a collective effort to design a common language for programming large scale and real-time systems. This report is the proposed standard document for Ada. Since the early 70's, DoD has been committed to the use of High Order Languages and has developed an extensive set of requirements for a single language which could be adopted for use throughout DoD. In April 1978, the language designed by Jean Ichbiah and his team at Honeywell/Cii-Honeywell Bull, Paris, France, was chosen to be the new DoD language. For the ensuing fourteen months, Ada was subjected to an intense period of test and evaluation by the international computer science community and the design was modified in response to language issues raised during the test and evaluation. It will be added to the list of approved languages for use in DoD systems and promises to have a significant impact on DoD software development. Ada will be reviewed under American National Standards Institute (ANSI) canvass procedures for designation as an American National Standard and is on the agenda for the International Standards Organization (ISO). The DoD is concentrating on the development of compilers and an integrated programming support environment for Ada software. Although developed for use in DoD systems, Ada has generated considerable interest in the international computing community, particularly NATO, as well as in the U.S. commercial computing community.
