The condition of the working class in England by Friedrich Engels( Book )

384 editions published between 1845 and 2018 in 11 languages and held by 5,062 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Condition of the Working Class is the best-known work of Engels, and in many ways still the best study of the working class in Victorian England. It was also Engels's first book, written during his stay in Manchester from 1842 to 1844. Manchester was then at the very heart of the Industrial Revolution and Engels compiled his study from his own observations and detailed contemporary reports. The fluency of his writing, the personal nature of his insights, and his talent for mordant satire combine to make this account of the life of the victims of early industrial change into a classic - a historical study that parallels and complements the fictional works of the time by such writers as Gaskell and Dickens. What Cobbett had done for agricultural poverty in his Rural Rides, Engels did - and more - in this work on the plight of the industrial workers in the England of the early 1840s." "This edition includes the prefaces to the English and American editions, and a map of Manchester c.1845."--BOOK JACKET

In this single volume is the best collection of writings on Religion by the two founding fathers of Communism. In it the reader will find the entire arsenal of ideas with which Marx and Engels hoped to explode the religious foundations of all previous societies. Yet also, in these writings - as Reinhold Niebuhr shows in his introduction- "are clues to that remarkable development of which many students have been made aware, of an irreligion transmuted into a new political religion, canonized precisely in the writings of Marx (and the later Lenin) as sacred scripture, and preached ... as the principles for a revolutionary reformation of the social order according to an immutable dogma

The Communist manifesto : a modern edition by Karl Marx( Book )

17 editions published between 1998 and 2012 in English and held by 1,039 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The focus of this modern edition is not primarily the vivid history of Marx and Engels' most important work. Rather, with a characteristically acute introduction by historian Eric Hobsbawm, it asserts the pertinence of the Manifesto today. Hobsbawm writes that 'the world described by Marx and Engels in 1848 in passages of dark, laconic eloquence, is recognizably the world we live in 150 years later'. He identifies the insights which underpin the Manifesto's startling contemporary relevance: the recognition of capitalism as a world system capable of marshalling production on a global scale; its devastating impact on all aspects of human existence, work, the family and the distribution of wealth; and the understanding that, far from being a stable, immutable

Capital: a critical analysis of capitalist production by Karl Marx( Book )

137 editions published between 1886 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 957 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Few writers have had a more demonstrable impact on the development of the modern world than has Karl Marx (1818-1883). Of central importance then and later was his book Das Kapital, or, as it is known to English readers, simply Capital. Volume One of Capital was published in Paris in 1867. This was the only volume published during Marx's lifetime and the only to have come directly from his pen. Volume Two, published in 1884, was based on notes Marx left, but written by his friend and collaborator, Friedrich Engels (1820-1895). Marx's critique of the capitalist system is rife with big themes: his theory of 'surplus value', his discussion of the exploitation of the working class, and his forecast of class conflict on a grand scale
