The crisis of the Reformation by Norman Sykes( Book )

41 editions published between 1938 and 1967 in English and held by 851 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The theme of this book is that the Reformation was fundamentally a religious revolution, though political and economic forces influenced its development. Criticism and dissatisfaction with the Roman Church were not confined to finance and administration, but touched the doctrines and practices associated with Mass and penetrated to the problem of Divine Grace. In a series of chapters the Lutheran, Calvinist and Anglican churches are examined, primarily from the standpoint of their theology, worship and church order. Professor Sykes then surveys the Counter-Reformation and the Council of Trent, and explains the differences dividing Rome from the Reformed churches. Finally, he offers a critical appreciation of the gains and losses of the Reformation." -- From dust jacket
