Troilus and Criseyde by Geoffrey Chaucer( )

308 editions published between 1483 and 2018 in 6 languages and held by 8,024 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Troilus and Criseyde, one of the most beautiful and one of the longest of Chaucer's poems, was written between the years 1379 and 1383, when the author was in his early forties. Derived principally from Giovanni Boccaccio's Il Filostrato and the Historia Troiae of Guido delle Colonne, it containes exquitse translations from Petrarch and Dante. Numerous editions have appeared since that of Thomas Thynne in 1532, and the poem now takes its rightful place in Everyman's Library for the first time. Thie new edition has been prepared by Mr John Warrington from the celebrated Campsall Manuscript, which was made for King Henry V when he was Prince of Wales; and where the reading is doubtful or obviously corrupt, recourse has been had to other manuscript sources and the emendations of former editors. The spelling has been very slightly modernized; but in no case have the words, metre or sound of the original been altered. In order to overcome the remaining difficulties, arising from the unfamiliar vocabulary and syntax of Middle English, words and shorter phrases are 'translated' in the margin; longer paraphrases are given in footnotes. The reader is thus spared the necessity of constant reference to glossaries and notes at the end of the volume. (Inside cover)

5 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 1,328 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This work offers facing-page translations of lesser-known poems by Geoffrey Chaucer. The modernization of Chaucer's verse to date has been restricted largely to the longer poems such as The Canterbury Tales and Troilus and Criseyde. While these works demonstrate Chaucer's mastery of the epic and narrative forms, it is in the court poems that we hear what is closer to the actual voice of Chaucer speaking to his contemporaries. The introduction discusses the "complaint," a popular medieval genre that Chaucer often used in his verse, sometimes with a straight face, sometimes not. Providing these
