With extensive contributions by and about the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous, William Griffith Wilson and his wife Lois ("Bill W." and "Lois W.") and Robert Holbrook Smith ("Dr. Bob"); material about preparation of The big book (Alcoholics Anonymous, 1939) and other books published by A.A. including Alcoholics Anonymous comes of age; the emergence of Alateen and Alanon; and A.A. grapevine material. While focusing on the history of Alcoholics Anonymous, this audiovisual archive also includes materials on the Hazelden Foundation and other self-help and twelve-step organizations. The films are productions of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The reel-to-reel tapes and the cassettes based on them are unpublished. The rest of the cassettes are largely productions of Bill's Tapes, Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Dicobe Tapes, the Listen to Learn Tape Library, and the American Audio & Tape Library. Catalogs for some of these audiocassette producers are also part of the collection
