Selected prose of Christina Rossetti by Christina Georgina Rossetti( Book )

11 editions published in 1998 in English and Undetermined and held by 621 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Christina Rossetti is one of the best known and loved of Victorian poets, yet only recently has she emerged from comparative critical obscurity. This is partly due to a late 20th-century rediscovery of women writers and partly because of a renewed interest in Victorian culture. Although Rossetti's poetry is readily available, her prose works have remained largely ignored. Selected Prose of Christina Rossetti is the first book to address this deficiency by making accessible reliable texts illustrative of all her prose. The editors have collected selections of Rossetti's prose in its three modes: fiction, non-fiction, and devotional. Rossetti wrote prose all her life, beginning with fiction, and continued with moral tales, stories for children, and thoughtful articles on such literary figures as Petrarch, Dante, and Leopardi. But above all else, she wrote devotional books. She wrote six religious works, first the brief Annus Domini and lastly the massive work on the Apocalypse, The Face of the Deep, published shortly before her death. This groundbreaking anthology helps to reveal Rossetti's deep personal faith while also illuminating nineteenth-century religious thought and spirituality. - Publisher

Christina Rossetti : the complete poems by Christina Georgina Rossetti( Book )

6 editions published between 2001 and 2007 in English and held by 481 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Overview: A captivating collection of enduring verse by one of the Victorian era's most beloved poets. Rossetti is unique among Victorian poets for the sheer range of her subject matter and the variety of her verse form. This collection brings together fantasy poems, such as Goblin Market, and terrifyingly vivid verses for children, love lyrics and sonnets, and the vast body of her devotional poetry. Rossetti's poems weave connections between love and death, triumph and loss, heavenly joys and earthly pleasures. The directness and clarity of her lyrics still have the power to startle us with their truth and beauty
Maude by Christina Georgina Rossetti( Book )

27 editions published between 1897 and 2002 in English and Spanish and held by 440 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Writing from very different perspectives and backgrounds, Christina Rossetti and Dinah Mulock Craik were profoundly concerned with the problems of single women and female vocation. Maude, written when Rossetti was nineteen years old, reveals, with great clarity, her desires and anxieties about literary achievement within the confines of Victorian values and family restrictions. Although never seriously drawn to convent life, Rossetti became for a time an associate of one of the flourishing and controversial Anglican Sisterhoods. Craik's essay On Sisterhoods, in which she encourages unmarried women to join these organisations, shows that in offering work, responsibility and security outside the family, the sisterhoods presented a challenge to contemporary ideas about the place and duty of women. The immensely popular, progressive and optimistic A Women's Thoughts about Women emerges as an essentially rational work, urging women to act individually, collectively and above all positively, in forging their own destinies

16 editions published between 1994 and 2008 in English and Undetermined and held by 411 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This edition contains Rossetti's strongest and most distinctive work: poetry (including Goblin Market, The Prince's Progress, and the sonnet sequence Monna Innominata), stories (including the complete text of Maude), devotional prose (with nearly fifty entries from the "reading diary" Time Flies), and personal letters. Those poems which Rossetti published, and those which she withheld from publication, are here brought together in chronological order, allowing the reader to observe her poetic trajectory. This edition also records the major revisions made by Rossetti when preparing her poems for publication. It brings together the fullest range of Rossetti's poetry and prose in one volume and is an indispensable introduction to this entrancing writer. - Back cover
