James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was one of the most original artists of the late nineteenth century. Flamboyant dandy and ebullient publicist, friend of Oscar Wilde, Whistler was also a meticulous craftsman dedicated to the perfection of his art. Whistler was born in America but trained in Paris. He began as a realist painter but gradually developed a startlingly original method of composition, refining his technique to the barest essentials. He was one of the first to argue that the abstract ingredients of a painting - the lines, shapes, colours and tones - could in themselves be the subject; he entitled the portrait of his mother Arrangement in Grey and Black. This book provides a wide survey of carefully selected works, making it an ideal introduction to Whistler's art

After Whistler : the artist and his influence on American painting by Linda Merrill( Book )

5 editions published in 2003 in English and French and held by 577 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This illustrated book - published to commemorate the centenary of the artist's death - addresses Whistler's extraordinary legacy and establishes his pivotal place in the history of American art." "After Whistler juxtaposes fourteen of the artist's most important works with an array of pictures by thirty-eight other American painters - including Henry Ossawa Tanner, William Merritt Chase, and John Singer Sargent - to demonstrate how Whistler's American contemporaries were affected by his techniques, color palette, compositions, and subject matter. The introduction to the book provides an overview of Whistler's association with American artists and the reception of his work in the United States. The essays that follow discuss Whistler's Venetian sojourn and its effect on the American artists who flocked to that city: his relationship with Philadelphia's art community; the Whistler Memorial Exhibition held in Boston in 1904; and much more." "This volume is essential reading anyone interested in American art and Whistler's role in it's history."--Jacket
Palaces in the night : Whistler in Venice by Margaret F MacDonald( Book )

4 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 494 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The year 1879 found the American artist James McNeill Whistler in London, in the dire financial straits which led to his bankruptcy. In September, armed with a contract from the Fine Art Society for a set of twelve etchings, he sought refuge in Venice. With his model and mistress Maud Franklin he stayed there for some fourteen months. The unique and timeless beauty of Venice inspired some of his greatest works: atmospheric oil paintings of Venetian nights, a hundred vivid pastels, and fifty of Whistler's finest etchings." "This illustrated book discusses the whole range of Whistler's Venetian work. The views he chose ranged from quiet canals to Renaissance palaces. He found beauty in intimate scenes of ordinary life, drawing fishermen and bead-stringers at their work. Whistler's approach to Venice, and his selection and treatment of subjects, casts revealing light on this creative process and shows his changing artistic response to the city itself and to individual subjects."--Jacket
James McNeill Whistler : drawings, pastels, and watercolours : a catalogue raisonné by Margaret F MacDonald( Book )

8 editions published between 1994 and 1995 in English and held by 491 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Painter, etcher, draughtsman, lithographer, watercolourist, and author of critical essays and aphorisms, James McNeill Whistler had a tremendous influence on the art and aesthetics of his era. Born in Massachusetts in 1834, he settled in London when he was twenty-five years old and for the next four decades produced hundreds of highly acclaimed (and sometimes highly criticised) works. His prodigious output and proficiency, along with his eccentricities, polemics, and arguments with critics, won him wide recognition. This catalogue raisonne of Whistler's drawings, pastels and watercolours makes available many of his works that have never before been exhibited or published and vividly demonstrates the wide range of his art. His drawings reveal the everyday working out of his ideas and note the world as it passed by Whistler with vigour and humour. The pastels include sensitive portraits, vigorous studies of models in the studio, and detailed views of Venetian palaces. The watercolours, perhaps his finest works, catch the subtle colours of northern skies and ever-changing seascapes

The gentle art of making enemies. With an introd. by Alfred Werner by James McNeill Whistler( Book )

83 editions published between 1890 and 2010 in English and held by 449 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In his Gentle Art of Making Enemies the expatriate American Painter James Abbot McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) included these excerpts from the court proceedings of 1878 in his libel suit against John Ruskin. Whistler was awarded a farthing in damages, but public sentiment so strongly favored Ruskin that Whistler was forced into bankruptcy. The trial, marked by considerable hilarity and the sallies of Whistler's pugnacious wit, was a rather dubious attempt to prove at law the viability of a work of art, Nocturne in Black and Gold--The Falling Rocket."

Like breath on glass : Whistler, Inness, and the art of painting softly by Marc Simpson( Book )

4 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Through an innovative manner of handling paint, a group of American artists around 1900 created deceptively simple canvases that convey images of shimmering transcience, visions suggested rather than delineated. Focusing on this singular aesthetic characteristic - softness - this book explores this painterly phenomenon
