Leonardo(
Book
)
495 editions published between 1651 and 2019 in 10 languages and held by 2,744 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The genius of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) shines forth in major paintings such as the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper and his many drawings. How Leonardo accomplished these astounding works of art is shown in A Treatise on Painting, published in 1651, essentially a primer for students interested in learning the craft of drawing and painting." "Leonardo begins with careful instructions on drawing the main features of human anatomy, and then moves on to techniques of rendering motion and perspective. He discusses aspects of good composition; inventiveness; the expression of various emotions; creating effects of light, shadow, and color; and many other subtle points of artistic form. Throughout, Leonardo stresses the importance of meticulous study of the subjects to be rendered and the need for assiduous practice." "This edition is complete with anatomical drawings by the French classicist master Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) and geometrical illustrations by the great Italian Renaissance architect Leon Battista Alberti (1404-1472), as well as an informative biography of Leonardo and an appendix that lists the artist's manuscripts, principal paintings, and drawings."--Jacket

Leonardo on painting : an anthology of writings by
Leonardo(
Book
)
5 editions published between 1989 and 2001 in English and held by 1,097 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Leonardo's writings on painting were never edited by Leonardo himself into a coherent treatise. The book known as Leonardo's Treatise on Painting, first published in 1651, comprises a compilation of quotations, described by one early translator as a "chaos of intelligence." This anthology aims to bring order into the chaos, so Leonardo's views can be read in a logical and sequential manner. The authors have edited material not only from the Treatise but also from Leonardo's surviving manuscripts and from other primary sources, some of which are here translated for the first time. Included among these are Leonardo's own letters and memoranda, letters by contemporaries, and important documents to which he was a signatory. The book begins by looking at Leonardo's general principles of painting. Then follow sections on the optical foundations of art, the human body, the appearance of nature, and the practice of painting, including instructions for the artist and evocative accounts of subject matter.--From publisher description

Leonardo da Vinci and the art of sculpture by
Gary M Radke(
Book
)
13 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 861 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) is renowned as a painter, designer, draftsman, architect, engineer, scientist, and theorist. His work as a sculptor is not commonly acknowledged, and many have argued that Leonardo believed that sculpture was an inferior art form ("of lesser genius than painting"). Challenging and overturning these assumptions, Leonardo da Vinci and the Art of Sculpture looks at the sculptural projects that the artist undertook, as well as the late Renaissance sculptures that were indebted to him. Leonardo consistently drew inspiration from ancient sculpture, admired the work of such contemporary sculptural innovators as Donatello, and even trained under Andrea del Verrocchio, the preeminent bronze sculptor of late 15th-century Florence. Furthermore, Leonardo spent many years of his life working on two larger-than-life-sized horse sculptures - Sforza and Trivulzio - monuments to Francesco Sforza, the Duke of Milan, and to Gian Giacomo Trivulzio, his successor. Although neither was completed, the authors argue that these equestrian monuments show how Leonardo was intensely engaged with the design dilemmas of representing a horse rearing on its hind legs. Another highlight of the book is a group of new images of the John the Baptist Preaching to a Levite and a Pharisee, a recently restored large-scale work in the Florentine Baptistery that clearly demonstrates Leonardo's collaboration with Giovanni Francesco Rustici."--Jacket

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), one of the greatest figures of the Italian Renaissance, is renowned not only for the artistic mastery of his painting and drawing but for the richness of his intellect and his insatiable curiosity about all aspects of the natural and man-made world. Leonardo was among the first artists to study human anatomy in great detail, and his anatomical drawings reveal him to be a gifted observer of the human body. He studied not only living men and women but cadavers, which he dissected with painstaking care in order to draw each vessel, muscle, and organ with ultimate precision. The Royal Library at Windsor Castle houses the finest private collection of drawings in the world, and its greatest treasure is a magnificent group of more than six hundred sheets by Leonardo. Reproduced here are forty-one of his finest anatomical drawings, incorporating countless studies and commentaries in the artist's hand. The sheets, dating from 1489 to c. 1513, show the remarkable evolution, of his drawing style as well as his anatomical knowledge. Images of great beauty and scientific interest, they herald Leonardo as one of the most accomplished artists in the history of anatomy
