Gustav Klimt was born in Austria in 1862 and spent his working life in Vienna, a city whose artistic chaos made it an extraordinary place to live. In his early career he received a public commission to paint a series of frescos, and received the "Gold Cross for Artistic Merit" for his Burgtheater murals. However, his name is most enduringly linked to the Viennese Secession. This revolutionary movement separated itself definitively from public, academic art. The atmosphere of Klimt's Nuda Veritas could be likened to the slow languor of Strauss's operas or to the theatre productions of Schnitzle

Gustav Klimt : drawings & watercolors by Rainer Metzger( Book )

3 editions published between 2005 and 2007 in English and held by 708 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gustav Klimt the painter has always tended to overshadow Gustav Klimt the draughtsman. One of the most fascinating representatives of the Belle Epoque, Klimt is cherished for his rich use of ornament and his paintings of fin de siecle Viennese high society, which bring to life the decadence of the era through vibrant colours and patterns. Yet there can be no doubt about Klimt's greatness as a draughtsman." "Here, Rainer Metzger brings together hundreds of Klimt's works on paper in a way that enriches our knowledge of the artist and enhances the visual impact of his oeuvre. Many revolve around Klimt's taboo-breaking main themes - the naked woman, erotica and homoerotica - while others provide allegorical and historical insights. Between these two poles lie Klimt's elegantly direct and intoxicating preparatory sketches and studies tirelessly and manically executed - frameworks that would lay the foundations for his paintings."--Jacket
Gustav Klimt : the Ronald S. Lauder and Serge Sabarsky collections by Gustav Klimt( Book )

8 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 523 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was on of the gaints of twentieth-century art. As the fonder and first president of the Secession in 1897, Klimt was a central figure in the cultural life of Vienna's Golden Age and provided a crucial link between nineteenth-century Symbolism and Modernism. His sensual portrayals of women and richly patterened landscapes anticipated many of the formal advances of his peers. Klimt pushed the boundaries of artistic expression and developed a unique pictorial vocabulary, drawing from sources of the past to create a refined, delicate, highly evacative style. Klimit's work embodies the quintessence of fin de siècle Vienna"--Inside cover

Gustav Klimt, 1862-1918 by Gilles Néret( Book )

5 editions published between 1993 and 2007 in 3 languages and held by 367 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Gustav Klimt's art thoroughly expresses the apocalyptic atmosphere of Vienna's upper middle-class society - a society devoted to the cultivation of aesthetic awareness and the cult of pleasure. The ecstatic joy which Klimt and his contemporaries found - or hoped to find - in beauty was constantly overshadowed by death. And death therefore plays an important role in Klimt's art. Klimt's fame, however, rests on his reputation as one of the greatest erotic painters and graphic artists of his times. In particular, his drawings, which have been widely admired for their artistic excellence, are dominated by the erotic portrayal of women. Klimt saw the world "in female form". A kiss cashes in : Klimt between art and business( Visual )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 255 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although his contemporaries deemed Gustav Klimt's output "painted pornography suitable for pagan orgies," reproductions of his work are now booming in popularity. The Klimt Museum in Vienna sells an almost infinite variety of merchandise bearing his famous Kiss: along with the customary posters and coffee mugs, tourists can buy Klimt dog blankets, chocolates, Barbie dolls, umbrellas, and cookbooks. This program offers theories about why The Kiss is so well-suited to commercialization and contrasts Klimt's current success to the shocked reviews he garnered in his time. The video goes to the Klimt Museum; the Klimt Center, built to commemorate the site where the artist brought his mistresses; and a Klimt-themed nursing home in Vienna

Gustav Klimt : 1862-1918 ; die Welt in weiblicher Gestalt by Gottfried Fliedl( Book )

24 editions published between 1989 and 2006 in 4 languages and held by 223 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

(Bespr. v. 1989)
