Fuente Ovejuna by
Lope de Vega(
Book
)
729 editions published between 1600 and 2018 in 13 languages and held by 5,077 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Fuenteovejuna is an historical play, based on an uprising in the village of Fuenteovejuna (North West of Córdoba) in 1476. It was composed probably between 1612 and 1614. The action of the play takes place in 1476, but with implications not just for the audience of the 17th century but for all ages: good governance, loyalty, justice, the meaning of honour, trust, true love, sacrifice. Is nobility restricted only to social rank? The main plot centres on the relationship between the noble, Fernán Gómez de Guzmán, Comendador (Knight Commander) of the Order of Calatrava, and the villagers of Fuenteovejuna; the subplot addresses the relationship between the Comendador and the Catholic Monarchs. In both, the Comendador creates disorder. For order and harmony to return, the Comendador must either recognise his error or be destroyed

)
118 editions published between 1621 and 2016 in 6 languages and held by 2,296 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Lady Nitwit = La dama boba by
Lope de Vega(
Book
)
259 editions published between 1618 and 2014 in 5 languages and held by 1,883 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Lady Nitwit/La dama boba is a perceptive character study of a female scatterbrain made wise in the ways of the world through the power of love. The plot moves rapidly from one delightfully comic situation to another, evoking the contradictions encountered in the course of love." "The dialogue sparkles with humor and repartee. The theme is universal in its appeal, and the treatment given it by Lope has the ring of modernity that makes this play one of the best comedies in his repertory. This edition features a prose translation of the original seventeenth-century play in facing page format."--Jacket

El castigo sin venganza by
Lope de Vega(
Book
)
153 editions published between 1800 and 2017 in 5 languages and held by 1,769 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The play dramatises the story of the adulterous relationship between the beautiful Casandra, Duchess of Ferrara, and her step-son, Federico, and the reaction of her husband, the Duke, himself a flawed and ambiguous figure. The dramatist, at the height of his powers, re-works an earlier Italian short story to explore the complexities of human desire and the grim consequences of giving in to temptation. Aimed principally at undergraduates who are new to Spanish Golden Age drama, this edition includes a substantial commentary on the text, explanatory footnotes and a selected vocabulary. The introduction sets the play in its contexts - historical and dramatic - and focuses too on elements of the genre with which new readers might be unfamiliar: performance norms, the poetry of the play and the linguistic differences in Golden Age Spanish
