"Within little more than a decade Raffaello di Giovanni Santi (1483-1520) transformed himself from a master of provincial church decoration to one of the greatest painters who ever lived. This illustrated catalogue tells the story of his artistic journey from Urbino, where he was born, to the papal court in Rome, via the Central Italian cities of Citta di Castello, Perugia, Siena and Florence." "This book follows this dramatic evolution from his origins in Urbino and the early influences of his father, Giovanni Santi, and the famous Umbrian master Pietro Perugino. It explores his earliest works in Umbria and his studies in Florence under the influence of Leonardo and Michelangelo, concluding by investigating how and why Raphael's art flourished and changed so dramatically under the enlightened patronage of Pope Julius II in Rome."--Jacket

The Cambridge companion to Raphael by
Marcia B Hall(
Book
)
12 editions published between 2005 and 2008 in English and held by 569 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This companion volume provides a timely reassessment of Raphael, the rare painter who has never gone out of fashion, and addresses the interests of recent scholarship, which has changed the focus from concerns with attribution and definition of the artist's style and the High Renaissance to more practical matters. Essays in this volume examine the intellectual and cultural history of sixteenth-century Rome and Florence that have made it possible to set Raphael in the context of his patrons and his other contemporaries. They demonstrate Raphael's considerable skills as the manager of the largest workshop of his day, one that provided a model for many artists who followed him."--Jacket

Raphael & the beautiful banker : the story of the Bindo Altoviti portrait by
David Alan Brown(
Book
)
4 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 454 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Five centuries ago a stunningly beautiful young man, heir to a banking fortune, sat for a portrait by Raphael. In the artist's dynamic conception, Bindo Altoviti turns as if to speak to his Florentine bride, Fiammetta. Ardently admired over the years, as it is today, Raphael's portrait was also coolly received by more than one influential critic who cast a shadow on its reputation. This gloriously illustrated book tells the story of the portrait's creation and of its unexpected trajectory through history." "Focusing on viewers' responses to Bindo Altoviti, the book describes the transformation of the picture from a family treasure into a supposed self-portrait of the artist; its public display in Munich, where it was first celebrated, then dismissed by sceptics claiming that it was neither of nor by Raphael; and its acquisition by canny English dealers who lured the panel out of Nazi Germany. Purchased as a Raphael by American collector Samuel H. Kress, the painting was donated in 1943 to the newly opened National Gallery of Art, where Bindo's image has beguiled visitors ever since."--Jacket

Raphael and his age : drawings from the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille by
Paul Joannides(
Book
)
6 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 288 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
One of the purposes of this exhibition and its catalogue is to help familiarize North American audiences with a great French collection of Italian drawings that, famous for its remarkable holding of sheets by Raphael, remains otherwise insufficiently known. The point is to show Raphael in his context and, perhaps more significantly, the context in the light of Raphael. It aims to provide pleasure and excitement for the visitor in encountering some of the most incisive and intelligent drawings produced in a period universally acknowledged to be one of great draftsmanship, but also to demonstrate that even geniuses require soil in which to grow. Thus while works by Raphael form the exhibition's center, they are placed in dynamic relation with those by his predecessors, contemporaries, and successors. /

The Raphael tapestry cartoons : narrative, decoration, design by
Sharon Fermor(
Book
)
4 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 263 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Raphael Cartoons were commissioned from the artist in 1515 by Pope Leo X. Completed in late 1516, they were planned as full-scale designs for a set of tapestries that Leo intended to cover the lower walls of the Sistine Chapel. The choice of Raphael and the lavishness of the materials that Leo stipulated for the tapestries, testify to the significance of the commission. The cartoons and tapestries depict selected acts of St Peter and St Paul, represented as the twin founders of the early church and the foundation stones of the Papacy. The major research programme carried out at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, during which each cartoon was minutely examined and X-rayed, has provided a unique opportunity for a fresh evaluation of these great works. The commentary, together with the fine reproductions of the restored cartoons and the detailed photographs taken during the course of examination, add significantly to our understanding of these important surviving examples of Renaissance art. /

"The present exhibition is both an abridgment and an enlargement of the one held in the British Museum in 1983 to celebrate the five-hundredth anniversary of Raphael's birth, which set out to include every drawing by him in the British collections. . .Of the ninety-one drawings now shown at The Pierpont Morgan Library, only forty-eight are by or attributed to Raphael himself. Greater emphasis is given to the studio. and the artists included in this section, in addition to Giulio and Penni, are the two slightly younger studio assistants Perino del Vaga and Polidoro da Caravaggio and Raphael's Sienese contemporary and associate in Rome Baldassare Peruzzi. All but ten of the forty-eight sheets catalogued under the name of Raphael come from four collections: the British Museum, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the Royal Library at Windsor Castle and the Devonshire Collection at Chatsworth. With the exception of No. 5, the others come from public and private collections in the United States." /

I, Raphael by
Dagmar Feghelm(
Book
)
4 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 237 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Alongside Michelangelo, Raphael Santi is considered one of the two great geniuses of Italian Renaissance art. Like his famous rival, Raphael left numerous statements about himself, which, together with other contemporary sources, provide us with a clear image of his personality and viewpoints. Not only does "I, Raphael" approach the painter through his work, it also offers a revealing view of the man behind the paintings. The book is structured with an impressive introductory section featuring double-spread illustrations faced by artist's quotes. This is followed by an introductory text and an overview of the various media he used - panel painting, fresco, graphics, architecture. There is an appendix with a chronological timeline (artworks, biography, historical events) and a guide to the location of Raphael's most important artwork today. There is a comprehensive bibliography with comments about the books. -- publisher's statement
